Any other scale modelers?
|
Yes. Not cars, and not for years, but when I was in college I studied the Battle of Britain and built a unit-specific model of every model and make of airplane used in the Battle.
Nice model, and nice photo of it. You are certainly a craftsman. |
Well, yeah. But mostly N scale model trains. I create master parts and then cast them out of resin for bits that are not available commercially. But now with laser printing I may have to change my processes. You can do a lot of cool stuff with it.

Awesome! I'm getting back into it and looking for tips! The GT is my welcome back!

It's what I do for a living. Garage and Barn Diorama's with whatever car the client wants.

Love your dioramas! l'm researching 917's for my next build. I have a vintage heller 917.
|
Thanks Jason! Heller made a very nice quality model.
In between paid pieces I'll have fun with freestyle scratch-built nonsense.......almost done. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1513995442.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1513995463.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1513995485.jpg |

I have those pics of the garage extensively (I used to be really into them when I was a kid. WWII, Tamiya stuff) every time you post them. I have to ask, how did you find the materials for the build just on those garages. There are no kits and how were you able too keep the scale realistic with just materials found? You can't just cut a piece of board down for the post and beams because the actual grain would be too big, unless you paint fakes ones on there to match the scale? This separates the men and the boys. |
I haven’t built a car or plane model since I was a teenager.
Really cool stuff Rob and Jason. |

As a boy I had all of the NASA vehicles starting with the X-1 right up to the LEM. Wish I still had them. You guys are making me want to re-start. Where do you source your kits from?
|
I get kits from E-Bay, also keep an eye out at garage sales etc.
Paints and other consumables I use some of the big hobby web pages. The closest hobby store is a two hour drive... |

Jason, very nice CGT. You have a lot more patience than me! I was really into top fuel and funny car kits when I was a lad, but they never turned out looking that good...
RKT, that freestyle piece you're working on is amazing - it looks like it's straight out of a Miyazaki film! |
Thats some great stuff...
Rob - would be interested to hear the story of how you ended up doing this for a living. Was it a full time gig? Commissioned art pieces? |

You are right, there are no kits for this kind of build! There are companies that make scale lumber mainly for model railroading trestles and bridges etc. Popcycle sticks and tongue depressors make up most of the "For Wheel Drive Victorian Motorhome" with a 3/8"base and lots of structural support. Very much like building a full size house. This on is just under 2 feet long and weighs about ten pounds. The barns are mostly basswood that I scrape to get the grain to stand out and then weathered with different methods including coffee. Just about every build I will discover some new way to make things look old and weathered. This one was the old barn completely collapsed on the Speedster. 1/18th scale.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514049623.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514049655.jpg |

Like many others I built model cars as a kid but reached that age where I wanted to work on full size cars. When I quit working a few years ago I started my own business selling diecast models. I built a garage with a 73 Carrera RS that Seinfeld had just bought from a friend of mine. At the annual Porsche Lit Meet I presented it to Jerry and he wanted more. I built quite a few for him and others and pretty much stopped selling the diecast and focused on building. Presently most of my builds are in a art gallery in Laguna Beach but I still build special requests for individual clients. 50's Texaco gas station...... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514050846.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514050891.jpg |
1:1 scale count? :)
Just finished 11 hours of printing on this half. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514052998.jpg |
Rob - beautiful work. Does the art gallery have pictures of your other work posted online? If so, a link would be great to see more.

Website...... The Gallery of Speed! seems to be down right now |

Next time we go down there, I keep an eye out for this gallery. I am sure I have walked right by it many times. |
Those collapsed pieces are truly well thought out with every piece placed at its exactly location. Look so damn realistic but to the untrained eye its just a pile of small wood piece thrown on top of each other. I must ask, how the hell did you make that old fashion gas pump? I know, that isn't something you buy at the toy store

An HO depot that I scratch built.

This doesn't even approach the skill of Rob's stuff, but this one is very meaningful to me. My friend took a couple of pictures from the family album and recreated my dad's '37 Ford panel delivery sitting in front of the little country grocery store my parents ran when I was a little kid.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514072227.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514072227.jpg There is also a photo of the front end of the truck showing the pushed-in radiator grille. The license plate is falling off now so you can't see it, but we did research to get the right colors for a 1953 Ohio plate. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514072227.jpg |

Oh you are killing me! I miss that one, should have never sold it! Should have kept the '55 Outlaw and really should have kept the '55 Speedster!!
|
I have a couple I'm starting in the New Year. Any painting tips?
|
Personally, I stopped using my airbrush years ago because the quality of rattle can paint is much better than years ago.
I use paint from Automotive Touchup .com especially if I am building a model of a clients car and need to match it perfectly. Their primer is great and can be sanded to almost a gloss. The final clearcoat from AT is amazing too. Makes painting easy. |

I like building Tamiya models if I have free time. My four year old enjoys them too!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514189056.jpg |
Our 8 year old son loves doing military recreations so he got a Fletcher class destroyer (Tamiya) to build the Johnston 557 from TF3 and the battle of Samar/Leyte Gulf. It is the wrong bridge, but it is close enough and the choices are limited for a quality model. Will probably get him a B17 to build ol' 666 the recon plane in the Pacific theater.

great work R K T
I loved building car models when I was a youngster, then with work moved onto the real thing and over last few years have been collecting 1 43 scale models of the cars I've worked on. Got at least 100 different cars stashed away, really need to get them out of the cupboards and put them in a display case, |
