Takata airbag recall grows by 3.3 million more cars

Takata airbag recall grows by 3.3 million more cars
https://www.thecarconnection.com/news/1114651_takata-airbag-recall-grows-by-3-3-million-more-cars

Quote:
An additional 3.3 million cars using Takata airbag inflators have been added to an already massive recall list. The tally now stands at approximately 34 million vehicles, making it the largest wave of recalls in U.S. history.

The latest round affects cars made by Honda, Toyota, Audi, BMW, Daimler Vans, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Jaguar-Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, and Tesla, and it covers certain vehicles built between 2009 and 2010 and some from 2013.
I heard on the news one make of car owners were told not to drive their cars anymore - just park it, more people killed and or injured.

Quote:
Takata is one of the largest airbag suppliers to automakers. Since discovery of the flaw in 2013, recalls on 46 million inflators have been issued. While Takata says only vehicles with prolonged exposure to hot and humid conditions are affected, all cars with the faulty inflators are subject to recalls.

Of those cars recalled, more than half have yet to be repaired.

Since the recall began, Takata has filed for bankruptcy, been fined $1 billion, and three executives have been convicted for falsifying data.

Ferrari and McLaren are on the list too.

I have two Hondas and get postcards warning about this almost every week. I've entered my VIN on the gov site and each time it comes back "not affected" or similar.

My used Dodge truck was affected. I received the recall notice two weeks after purchasing it in 2015; parts finally became available November 2017.

It's amazing to me that this defect has become so widespread.

I haven't received any postcards, but I also find that my 2006 BMW X5 appears on the NHTSA page under "Vehicles Affected", but not when using the "Recalls Lookup Tool". I noted this disclaimer on the "Vehicles Affected" page:

"NOTE: This list is subject to change and does not guarantee that any specific vehicle is or is not included in any of the Takata recalls. Vehicle owners are urged to use NHTSA’s Recalls Lookup Tool to check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for any open recalls, including Takata recalls."

I concluded that my specific vehicle is not included on the recall list even though if falls within the overall category of vehicles listed on the "Affected" page. I have not received any postcards or other notifications and the fact that you have may be a function of Honda being proactive and mailing out the same warning that is posted on the NHTSA page, "Vehicles Affected." If your VIN is also included on the postcard, then I would conclude that the vehicle is affected, regardless of what the "Recalls Lookup Tool" says.

EDIT: I just went back to the NHTSA site and read more fully. Apparently, Honda is one of the vehicles considered under the "Critical Warning" recall and has top priority in the recall. That may be why you receive the postcards. Still, it would seem that your VIN would appear in the Lookup Tool database.

Personally, I am not comfortable in my situation, and I will continue to monitor the Lookup Tool site to see if my VIN stays clean. From today's search, it is noted on the site that the recalls are updated as of Jan. 15, 2018, which is today's date.

I saw one report that people are going into the junk yards and buying all the Takata airbags from totaled vehicles that did not have a airbag deployment just to get the airbag to get it out of the system. It is just an amazing problem. Several people have purchased a car that had a used defective airbag. Imagine thinking your car was repaired but some low life swapped it out with a defective one to make a few extra bucks.

I'm not picking up the angle here.

Low life cheaters will buy a wrecked car wash the title and resell the car as just a used car. It still has the defective airbag but it has been removed from the recall since that car was totaled. They want to be sure the defective airbag has been removed from the parts supply.
