Seniors: How old are you and how long do you plan on driving your 911?

With the recent economic downturn, I figure I'll probably working until I die, and maybe after!

Seriously, though, someone who knew I recently turned 61 asked how much longer I was going to keep the car. I told him I was going to drive it until I died and then they were going to use it to wheel me in my casket up to my grave.

Provided we will still be able to get fuel and parts for our cars, how long do you figure you'll still be driving the 911? And what age are you now?

Paul, I'm in the same boat..exactly the same boat! They are going to have to pry my cold dead fingers off of the 930S steering wheel. I've had the car since 85 so its still new to me.

If you're older than me...

Other clues:

AARP is sending you applications.

Women you are attracted to call you "sir".

Everytime you work under your car, it takes more effort to get up.

You are in any of RacerBVD's vintage BMX pics.

Older than 57
AARP member
Women of all ages now call me Sir
Definitely harder to get out from under the car
BMX was after my time

I must be a senior !!

I'm 62, have had the 911 for 25 years. I intend to drive it until I can no longer get in and out of it for whatever reason. The real problem I see now is I have several grandchildren who want it really badly so I may need to watch my back. One of them has already threatened to have me put away the minute I start drooling.

Right here. I told more than one that I would keep the '71 FOR my retirement. We see where that went. Cars are a hobby for me. I could hobby with anything that I liked. The Carrera may see the block sometime this year. What comes after that I could not tell you, but it will be turnkey with only washing and waxing required.

I still have my wife's '44 Jeep if I want to get my hands dirty. In fact, there it sits in the driveway with the hood up. I got my hands dirty this morning.

Next April, I will celebrate my 80th birthday, 60th wedding anniversary and 42nd year of Porsche ownership. I drive my 88 Targa at least once a week and occasionally on 500 mile round trips to our Cannon Beach Oregon beach house. Fortunately, I am in good health and expect to still be driving my 911 when I am 90.

It's a sweet life!

Ron and Milt,

Sounds good but you aren't telling us how old you are now!

Lin,

That's the spirit. Good idea about the hydraulic clutch.

Jack,

LOL! Watch out for that drool!

Tincanguy,

80...that's amazing! You're an inspiration. I suddenly feel young again.

I am 60. Anybody who tells you that you are only as old as you feel, is young & ignorant!

Like 74-911 said, I will drive it until that time comes that I cannot get out of it! Getting in is relatively easy, but with aged long legs, my SC may become my condo, or worse

I will hit 60 Nov 3rd-- I feel like I am still 30 and have no plans of giving her up or to quit driving. Most serious issue was mentioned above. It really is a pain in the ass to get up after working on her. No pun intended

A friend of mine - an engineer at HP - did a spreadsheet calculation of all his expenses 20-25 years out and figured that he could retire at 75 and have enough money to live for two weeks after that.

I have told my wife that we will be investing in Grecian Formula. But at least I will look good in my 911.

I am 57

I just turned 50!

I promissed my 87 Carrera to my Grandsons Nate & Will (ages 3 & 5) when I can no longer push in the clutch. I hope that will be in 30-40 years from now. I explained that to both boys and they are fine with it.

Tincanguy:

You are a true inspiration. Thank you for sharing. It is wonderful to hear of someone that is as enthusiastic and stubborn about Porsches as I am.

I am 73. I have had my 71 911T since 1976. I drive it regularly, although 8hrs behind the wheel in 90+ degree heat, would probably not work for me. in the past few years, I have taken a more active interest in my car's mechanicals and have been doing most of my own work: maintenance, oil changes, transmission oil changes, half shaft replacemnts, oil line replacements, heat exchanger R&R, and some esthetic stuff.

I've had some physical limitations as a result of a total knee replacement and a lumbar laminectomy, but it is the arthritis that concerns me the most for the future.

I find that getting in and getting out of the car takes a little longer, but once in, driving is great and I feel like a kid again (and since my cataract removal surgery, I can see what I am doing much better.)

I will continue to drive it until I physically cannot. Same goes for wrenching on it!

Gutes Fahrt und Gutes Besserung fur alles mein Porshce Freunden!!

Tom
