1st-World problems: WTF with tiny waffles?

It seems "Belgian" waffles are all the rage now, and I'm seeing them pop up in various places. Why are they so expensive, and why are they so tiny? Why don't they use the entire surface of the waffle iron? I've made waffles - I know how this stuff works.

I saw this sad example at a local chain and it's $4.

You are in California, which means you are a movie star or a multi millionaire or a multi millionaire movie star, so buy two of them to get the quantities right.

Lego my eggo?

You forgot to grab the whipped cream, and the chocolate sauce, and the sprinkles, and the cherries, and the banana slices.

Your fault for not making a proper $4 waffle! :p

svandamme 01-29-2018 08:20 PM

Well that's the normal size for a Belgian waffle from Liege (Town where FN herstal lives), although that price is not normal for a regular old waffle like that. It should be a pack of 10 for that price.. with chocolate on one side.
So "Luikse Wafel" or Sugar waffle we call those

http://www.piethuysentruyt.com/suikerwafels-maken.jpg

I'm not sure why you would put whipped cream on that , since it's a different kind of waffle.
It's more like something you bring on a picknick, of when you go out shooting or walking.. and you bring something as a snack.

The ones for whipped cream are made from a lighter dough and are bigger, and square.
They are called Brussels Waffles here.

http://www.kookeiland.be/recepten/fo...else-wafel.jpg

Those are the kind you eat as desert in a restaurant or tea room.. with powdered sugar and whipped cream.

speeder 01-29-2018 09:50 PM

Man, I love a good waffle. When I'm feeling particularly indulgent, I'll hit the coffee shop downstairs @ the BH Hotel and get a Belgian waffle w whipped cream and fresh fruit on it. They give you the maple syrup hot in a sealed, single serving size glass bottle.

As for $4, I think that's what they charge for a cup of coffee. The Sultan of Brunei needs to get the billion back he sunk into renovating the hotel. :)

I rarely eat breakfast, much less waffles, but I damn sure know where to go...and it ain't gonna be the size of a burger and cost $4 either....I'll even sit at the counter if by myself.

Hoity-toity crowd I hang with here though ;)

If'n I want to ruin my meal with whip cream, I go to the high faluttin' joint and get me some
Rooty-Tooty Fresh N' Fruity crap....I think I actually ordered that once ...it was 4am and I was impaired with the munchies :)...decades ago...yuck...

Maybe they don't want the batter to run down the side of the machine making a mess??

I try not to make them maximum size either so my 'machine' stays somewhat clean when I cook them on my 107 year old cast iron waffle maker but at least I try to make them bigger than 4"...

The dog photo is great. Now I'm curious, though...where do you guys get a waffle in a restaurant for under $4.00? In 2018, not 1963??

vash 01-30-2018 07:00 AM

i dont eat waffles. for my morning dose of diabetes..i prefer pancakes.

Still possible at Denny's. Caveat emptor.

craigster59 01-30-2018 07:24 AM

I like the old school thinner, crisper waffles rather than the fluffy Belgian style. And what's with the limp, floppy sorry excuse for a waffle that you get at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles? Barely even edible.

petrolhead611 01-30-2018 08:34 AM

Direct correlation to the size of the average Belgian waistline compared to that of the US citizenry

there is a restaurant here in Santa Rosa.

called Naked Pig. they have a waffle that people GUSH about. i ordered one. it comes with the syrup poured on by the chef. it was fantastic. about a 7" diameter. it was actually a BESPOKE waffle!! (sorry, couldnt resist) not perfectly round, more imperfectly kidney shaped.
it was crispy and airy..very airy. like it would be impossible to fill up with this thing. it was $12! and mostly air. a one time thing for me.

Dunno, but the ones at the hotel with the "free" breakfast are pretty good. Unlike that crap they call a waffle in the restaurant across from Disney Land.

Stay at a Fairfield Inn. You have to make them yourself, but the price is right...$99 endless breakfast, plus they throw in a free night at the hotel! SmileWavy

Waffle house is good for other breakfast items as well, they don't discriminate on which item will give you heartburn, and diabetes, they all do....it's a trucker's paradise !

Bill Douglas 01-30-2018 10:03 AM

I could go waffling on about how good ours are, but there in a French guy at the night market who does amazing ones. And he does a topping of reduced raspberries - French style he tells me :D

Had breakfast at a Waffle House on Orlando FL., had chest pains later in the day

legion 01-30-2018 11:18 AM

My wife and I stopped at a Waffle House for breakfast while going to see family in Tennessee 15 or so years ago. I remember nothing about the experience, but we haven't been to one since. I assume that's because we just weren't impressed.

GH85Carrera 01-30-2018 11:31 AM

Waffle House is mot much different than Denny's or Pancake house.

My wife and I go to breakfast at a local breakfast and lunch place about once a month. They close at 2:00 PM. Much nice and better food than the big chains.

^^That's funny right there. (California legislation to ban drinking straws for those who missed the earlier thread)

RKDinOKC 01-30-2018 11:55 AM

Visiting a friend that used to live in Dallas. we went to some big fancy hotel. Don't remember which one is was, but they had a complementary breakfast. Didn't seem to care if we had a room there or not. It was a very good spread and they had cooks at a big breakfast bar thing fixing basically whatever you wanted including regular sized waffles.

They are not small.

It's just that Americans are used to and expect ridiculously grotesque food portions.

And we wonder why we have an obesity problem.

masraum 01-30-2018 07:32 PM

There's a place near Houston that I've been to that sells "Liege Waffles". They are similar to what was posted.

If god had intended for waffles to be the size of a burger, then why are waffle irons the size they are? And the day my fat azz can't sit on the damn stool at the counter....well, then I'll just move to a booth ;). I keed...I'm actually around my playing weight of three decades ago....'cause I don't eat breakfast like I did back then....oink, oink.
