1st-World problems: WTF with tiny waffles?
It seems "Belgian" waffles are all the rage now, and I'm seeing them pop up in various places. Why are they so expensive, and why are they so tiny? Why don't they use the entire surface of the waffle iron? I've made waffles - I know how this stuff works.
I saw this sad example at a local chain and it's $4. ![]()

You are in California, which means you are a movie star or a multi millionaire or a multi millionaire movie star, so buy two of them to get the quantities right.

Well that's the normal size for a Belgian waffle from Liege (Town where FN herstal lives), although that price is not normal for a regular old waffle like that. It should be a pack of 10 for that price.. with chocolate on one side.
So "Luikse Wafel" or Sugar waffle we call those ![]() I'm not sure why you would put whipped cream on that , since it's a different kind of waffle. It's more like something you bring on a picknick, of when you go out shooting or walking.. and you bring something as a snack. The ones for whipped cream are made from a lighter dough and are bigger, and square. They are called Brussels Waffles here. ![]() Those are the kind you eat as desert in a restaurant or tea room.. with powdered sugar and whipped cream.

Man, I love a good waffle. When I'm feeling particularly indulgent, I'll hit the coffee shop downstairs @ the BH Hotel and get a Belgian waffle w whipped cream and fresh fruit on it. They give you the maple syrup hot in a sealed, single serving size glass bottle.
As for $4, I think that's what they charge for a cup of coffee. The Sultan of Brunei needs to get the billion back he sunk into renovating the hotel. ![]()

That's just awesome...
I rarely eat breakfast, much less waffles, but I damn sure know where to go...and it ain't gonna be the size of a burger and cost $4 either....I'll even sit at the counter if by myself. Hoity-toity crowd I hang with here though ![]() If'n I want to ruin my meal with whip cream, I go to the high faluttin' joint and get me some Rooty-Tooty Fresh N' Fruity crap....I think I actually ordered that once ...it was 4am and I was impaired with the munchies ![]() |

Maybe they don't want the batter to run down the side of the machine making a mess??
I try not to make them maximum size either so my 'machine' stays somewhat clean when I cook them on my 107 year old cast iron waffle maker but at least I try to make them bigger than 4"... ![]() |

The dog photo is great. Now I'm curious, though...where do you guys get a waffle in a restaurant for under $4.00? In 2018, not 1963??

Still possible at Denny's. Caveat emptor.

I like the old school thinner, crisper waffles rather than the fluffy Belgian style. And what's with the limp, floppy sorry excuse for a waffle that you get at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles? Barely even edible.

there is a restaurant here in Santa Rosa.
called Naked Pig. they have a waffle that people GUSH about. i ordered one. it comes with the syrup poured on by the chef. it was fantastic. about a 7" diameter. it was actually a BESPOKE waffle!! (sorry, couldnt resist) not perfectly round, more imperfectly kidney shaped. it was crispy and airy..very airy. like it would be impossible to fill up with this thing. it was $12! and mostly air. a one time thing for me.

Dunno, but the ones at the hotel with the "free" breakfast are pretty good. Unlike that crap they call a waffle in the restaurant across from Disney Land.
