The G Body 911 most telegenic car of all time

Got to thinking just how many BIG TIME motion pictures these cars have been featured in and all the stars that drove them.

In the 80s the silver screen loved these cars.

I remember seeing tequila sunrise in the movie theater as a kid and how the car was damn cool even though you couldn’t really see much of it. Only a 911 could have that kind of charisma.

Against all odds the SC convertible was damn cool.

Phil Collins did a music video back in 80s that featured a 911.

There were movies like “No mans land” that lacked cinematic quality but still had some cool 911s to the point its almost worth watching it solely for that..

Where am I going with this..

Porsche in the 80s was so damn cool. I mean seriously cool to a almost unimaginable point by today’s standards.

They were in fact cooler and more respected than even ferrari..

If you’re not old enough to have lived back in the “golden era” you simply cannot image what is was to drive a porsche in the 80s and if it was a 911.. you had coolest car money could buy. Period.

Those days are LONG GONE.

Anyhow just remembering the golden era of the 911. Hugo Boss ads, movie,tv,music videos those were the days. When porsche was still porsche.

Never again.

I'm a lot, lot, LOT younger than you.

The Whaletale 930 and Countach QV are still two of the coolest cars post emissions restriction era.

I love the lines of my 944's.

''Italian trash.'' What movie was that ?

The truth is, there are a lot of really fine cars from that era. The 911 happens to be one of the icons that really stands out.

I fell in love with Porsches when I was a kid in the 70s. It was great growing up in LA and seeing so many Porsches (and so many other cool cars), I wanted an SC or 3.2 but that was going to be years away.

I think back then Porsches were a bit more special, there were fewer of them being made and of course they only made sports cars at the time. The 911 shape, particularly the headlights, was unmistakable.

These days a 991 might be confused with some other GT car, the uniqueness has greatly diminished.

I think you aren't really that objective, in the 80ies there were loads of cars that stood out.. Like the Lambo Countach in Cannonball run, a lot of kids grew up with Lambo posters on the wall.

And when I drive around in my 987, with the Carnewall exhaust... I may be driving slow in town, not making much noise..
But I see those 10 year old boys turn their head when i drive by..and smile when I blip the throttle. So the cars still impress.

A Porsche though more are made each year then 40 years ago, still stands out from the pack because the pack is much bigger now then it was 40 years ago.. Market share wise Porsche did not grow that much if at all they did.

I'de say movies in the 80ies were more car focussed, movies these day are crap and CGI focussed. Big explosions. And the new cars don't get as much attention in such movies.
And when they do focus on cars, they get the old ones out for nostalgic reasons..

So it's a new era, with different movies.. not for the better.
I don't think the cars can be blamed for that.

To me it was the lovely green swb 911 driven by Robert Redford in Spygame that finally did it. I just had to have a 911.

Are you sure?
Look how top feature films in the past 2 years flash to a classic 911. Atomic Blonde, The Martian.

There is more design freedom on cars than ever but cars have never looked so homogenous, films have to reach back to find a car that can be so recognized and provide meaning in a glance. I'm shocked these cars still do that for the current generation.

Livy you got the wrong Car, Spygame was a 912.

Reachme, design freedom? where do you get that idea?
All cars need to adhere to crash safety, pedestrian safety, have a good Aero for low mileage.
Those 3 things already limit the design immensely..
No edges like the 80ies,
forget about short cars with little overhang up front because they need a lot of room for the plastic to move if a pedestrian hits it.
And Aero rules, well, you can't make a fuel economic car shaped creatively, the wind tunnel rules these days.

Oops. How embarrassing on a P-car forum.

Well, I fell for the body not the numbers anyway.

Falling for the body...the downfall of many men.

Looking back, I had many good times in my '69 912...

Been awhile since I’ve seen it but the sound was piped in flat six IIRC.

Back in the 1980s the director of Porsche AG Helmuth Bott came to Oklahoma City to talk to War Bonnet Tech. He is the father of the 959 and had a 959 as his company car daily driver.

He mentioned that he often drove the 959, and many other exotic Porsches around and no one even noticed the cars or paid attention.

He had one car that was his personal toy, an Model T Ford. When he drove it he received lots of attention and people waved and whistled. No doubt the audience is a big part of what gets noticed.

I do have to admit the 3.2 911 Carrera is a beautiful car, but I might be just ever so slightly prejudiced.

You mean trashed out, barely running, lots of illegal substances rolling around the interior?

Noooo. It was just kind of dusty.

Didn't he pull the stash from the inner fender, although the factory made an awesome repository?

Yes! I would be thrilled with that trashed out, barely running example - despite some illegal substances. Those can easily enough be gotten rid of.
The stash would not likely have been much of a secret in the “smugglers box” - any more so than if it were kept in the glove box. I’m sure any LEO worth his (her) salt would have popped the bonnet of a 911 immediately if any possession was in question. More so “back in the day” than now.

In any case, I would love the opportunity to own a longhood that I could actually drive without fear of a paint blemish. Kind of the point, isn’t it?

Besides, The Big Chill was really just a good movie.

always felt Italian junk (ferarri, early Maserati, lambo) was far more exciting to look at, and listen to, and the 911 was a practical version of a sub 8 sec. 0-60 vehicle. PWD's 72 got me looking at longhoods and once that gets in your blood it's hard to see much else.

watching episodes of Victory By Design I can tell you for sure if I hit the big lottery the bulk of my vehicle spending would be very early Italian stuff but the bulk of my driving fun would be in 911s.
