did the older generations spill that much fuel w/gascans?

man, the modern gas can is super frustrating!! valves and breathers all over the place..and they are dunked into the fuel. you have to pull out an oozy tube, flip it over after inserting it back thru the lid the other way. it is guaranteed you will coat yourself in fuel with that simple move. unless you hold it to the side so it can dribble on some endangered plant life of course.

i was a kid and i remember filling a few empty cars with a gas can. it was way less messy. am i remembering that right? well maybe the flexible hose nozzle dripped a bit.

i really wanted a funnel this morning

You are correct that most fuel jugs these days have impossibly fussy spouts that are supposed to be spill proof, but require you to get yourself dirty and smelly and inevitably spill fuel.

These are very good:

I like these too:
Eagle | Safety Cans

The old pour spouts were way better than the new ones, which were designed by incompetent idiots. I bought a couple of flexible Easy Pour spouts off of Amazon. They're the old style & come with a twist on cap and a vent you drill a hole for and install. They reduced my frustration level significantly.

I just put a few of my old metal cans back in use . It takes 10 minutes to empty a newer 5 gallon can . My old ones dump out in about 1 minute . I move a lot of fuel this time of year , usually 20- 30 gallons a week, so this one hits home for me .

The gas can I use is one I remember using at grandpa's house when I was a little kid. My dad used it for 30 years. Now it is mine. Almost every time I go to to the gas station to fill it up someone offers to buy it. I tell them the price is a thousand bucks to get me to sell it. One guy gave me his card and said "when you have the estate sale, call him."

It is just a old 5 gallon oil can from long ago when things were made to last.

In CA they have made cans that are sealed and don't evaporate fuel mandatory. That's nice and dandy, but the way they accomplished it probably ends up putting out more gas into the air ...

I have NATO 20l metal gas cans for my vehicles. These are completely tight and can ride in the cabin if needed without stinking up the interior. For Lawn mower I have an old style can. For my two stroke yard tools I have STIHL pre-mix in a regular 1 gallon can ...

There are ways around the madness. One more is the off road guys that have 5 gallon plastic cans with hoses ...

I grab the old style 5gal ones at garage sales. The ones with vents you pop open. Bought a EPA one once, not being familiar with the new outlets and ended up just trashing it.

You can replace the new "safe pour" spouts with DIY home improvement store PVC rigid white pipe, for something more sturdy, less hassle, more flow, lasts longer, and fairly cheap.

I have one that has a notch on the spout the rests on the edge of the tank. it is there to open the spout. it is kind of neat in that IF it works as soon as you lift up the gas should stop coming out.
still does not stop me from overfilling a tank.

now I just grab it with my hand and slide it to open or closed. still a 50/50 as to am I going to over fill.

why cant they just leave a good thing alone.

I had a home depot shop vac. worked great, lasted longer than I expected, no complaints.
so I bought another. you have to remove ALL the accessories AND the holder to empty it, it WILL NOT roll. they should have left the F alone!!!

I have never been able to get one of those to actually work the way they are supposed to. Not to mention that when you do manage to get fuel to come out, it sprays out sideways instead of down into the tank. Just because you can design something new doesn't mean it's better.

This thread perfectly illustrates how government solves problems: they dictate a one-size-fits all solution that not only doesn't work, but makes the underlying problem worse.

I have two 5 gallon diesel yellow plastic cans, 1 blue 5 gallon kerosene can, 2 red gasoline 5 gallon cans, a 2.5 gallon red gasoline can, and two 1 gallon red gasoline cans (one is mixed for the chainsaw). I am going to replace all of these spouts with the DIY PVC pipe spout for pennies each, rather than $8-$10 each for new.

Funny, same here. Its works great, sometimes, for a few second then... mess. Reducing spills and vapor loss sounds like a good idea to me, if the function of the can works as expected. Complete fail, where they only lab tested by the peddlers of said can?

On the other hand, this is a pro business move. Think of all the innovation from small business to solve a need.

Great quick-fill for not too much money.

The 10L 2.7 gallon may be the thing you want. The ripper cap works great
