NFL - Maybe This is What They Should be Worrying About

Concussions, what is a catch?, Kneeling protests, do the Patriots cheat? seem to be the main NFL issues making the news...

On Jeopardy yesterday one of the Categories was about the NFL. Not only did the three contestants not know any of the answers, they didn't even hazard a guess... strictly crickets. Rather obviously not fans:

We are all car guys here, so we can't understand someone who doesn't know squat about anything mechanical. Same thing goes with intellectuals, not knowing anything about sports, or Jocks knowing nothing about investing.

In my life, I seem to be surrounded by gamers who constantly geek out over the latest offerings, and can't seem to understand a hard day's work outdoors like I often do with everything from hay, sawdust, grease, to mud on my shoes.

I'm a fairly normal guy. A bit on the fringes for sure, but not a geek or some other alt personality. I know absolutely nothing about football, hockey, basketball or baseball and have no interest in it. None! For the life of me, I simply cannot fathom how otherwise normal people - both men and women - invest substantial amounts of time in following these sports. Its totally alien to me.

Its either a distraction from reality, or a necessary tool for career advancement. Not sure which. A person alone, in a vacuum, would not watch that stuff. No way!

Glad to hear there are others. People look at me like I have a third eye, when I tell them I don't follow sports.

I watched the show last night w my wife. I was yelling the answers at the TV.

2 men and one women.

One guy was a "banker". He really was the cash watchdog at the safe he said.
The woman was a lawyer.
The other guy was a theater major.

Not a big surprise that they didn't know the answers.

There is a good movie out there about the doctor who brought to light the severity of concussions in pro football... and the he11 the NFL gave him trying to cover up the ugly facts.

Hockey and motorcycle racing are alien to me....but growing up playing sports is part of me...gave up on baseball years ago, and don't watch a lot of b-ball (my passion), but I've been known to park my azz on the sofa and watch football a few times. Watching racing, tennis, hockey, golf, on TV...only abnormal folks do that

In high school I received the athlete/scholar award for GPA and sports. My son won the same award as a senior.

Competitive sports teach life lessons: sportsmanship, discipline, and the fact that if you want something you have to earn it and that hard work and dedication provide rewards.

They teach us that we are not all the same, we are not all given the same gifts or talent but it's up to us to do the best we can with what we have and that if we try hard enough and work hard enough we can get better at anything.
Sports promote physical strength and well-being as opposed to kids who are over-weight puter game players.
Sports teach us to be tough but also fair, and keep kids from crying bully bully bully i need to hurt myself cause someone said something mean to me.

Maybe that's why some folks feel so resentful of sports and ruin the competition with participation trophies and such. Hard to say.

Sports are not for everyone, but I know several many whiny brat entitled adults who could have used some time on the practice field.

Always been a sports fan, played basketball, and ran track in HS, and played countless pickup 3 on 3 playground B-ball games. My son had been in football since the third grade, and played a dominant role on his team all the way through HS until he graduated last year, so still a football fan.

I like to watch plays develop, and executed properly, and don't care at all for the pre-game hype, or the fan activities. I will watch the superbowl for the game, and really don't want to be at a SB party where I can't concentrate on the action.

It's not that hard to figure out.

It's a source of entertainment. No different than watching a movie, TV show, listening to music, or watching a motorcycle race.

It is also a shared experience that is part of social connections and interaction. It's been going on for hundreds or thousands of years. It's human nature.

And believe it or not, different people have different interests! Some of which may even be different than yours! For example, that people would invest substantial amounts of time accumulating old motorcycles, or tinkering with cars, or posting on Internet boards, would be "totally alien" to many (in fact, most) people.

^^^^ This...I watch games for the enjoyment of seeing the game itself, being played at a level that is beyond belief...if you were just average like I was, but I do know the sports inside out. Don't usually have a favorite team, and avoid public places and SB parties too.

Then I go sit on my front porch with a loaded shotgun and keep folks off my lawn

I used to take more than a passing interest in the NFL, now I am near zero.

There are multiple reasons, with signature ones being corruption, and attempting to sweep things under the rug unless it reaches social media, then bang, ban hammer. I don't like this sort of "mob" thinking.

Loved football growing up. Can still remember lineups and stats from the 90s. Then I moved to LA. Twenty years in a town without a real team sort of bled it out of me.

Watched a few games this season. It just looks like a hole millionaires running around chasing a ball now.
