Forgot about that scene in Heavy Metal :D

Popular Mechanics has a good explanation of the 'Space Tesla'.

Space Tesla Isn't Going to Mars

Really bummed I cannot get away to go see this just too busy at work.

Anyone heading there, enjoy!!

Great animation. I really like how the retro rockets return to Earth without getting damaged. (fingers crossed ;))

But Like others here I do wonder how sensible it is to send a car into space.

My advice; just get as close as you can. The sound is of course carried by the wind. Inside of Rt 1 is good, following 528 all the way towards the cruise ship port is better. We used to park on the last causeway on 528 to watch the Shuttles.

We are 22 miles as the crows fly(approx.) and we just step outside the front door for a good view. Sometimes we hear them, sometimes, naught.

If ya get close enough you will be able to catch some souvenirs if it goes boom.

According to Mr. Musk, a lot. “This is a test mission,” he said. “There is so much that can go wrong.”
As long as the rocket gets high enough so that any explosions do not damage the launchpad, Mr. Musk said he would regard that as a success.

Just for the record... Musk has fake hair.

CurtEgerer 02-06-2018 07:46 AM

Musk: "People [came] from all around the world," he said, "to see what will either be a great rocket launch or the best fireworks display they've ever seen."

He didn't seem too concerned either way in the interview.

We're about to find out!

Still 2 hours to go!

Musk is pretty savy actually. He needed a mass simulator and came up with using one of his cars. Got a little publicity out of it where as everyone else would have just shot off a hunk of metal of some sort.

CurtEgerer 02-06-2018 09:22 AM

T-0 delayed until 2:20 due to upper atmosphere wind shear.

Yep - anywhere along that part of the coast is great. It all comes down to weather and visibility.

I did a job in Orlando, we drove to this spot to view a shuttle launch, it was canceled due to weather (wind). :(

carreradpt 02-06-2018 10:39 AM

You just never know with these things. Folks travel from all over the world to experience these launches only to see them delayed for minutes to hrs to days. Oh well.

It's 79 here at the house with a nice breeze from the east and I plan to Pcar it somewhere in that direction to see the launch. Nice day for a drive.

Launch now set for 3:10pm

That. Was. Effing. Amazing.

Scott Douglas 02-06-2018 12:59 PM

Yeah that was Don.
So neat that all those guys get to see what they launch.
Landing the boosters was way cool too.
