Need opinions on a 996.

I've been eyeing this car all winter. Cheap, looks clean. I have not laid eye on it yet. I pinged the guy today, and asked him if he might be open to a trade for my Mach 1 Mustang + some cash. He is. Obviously condition will play in to this big time.

Given what is presented in the ad, thoughts about price?

Has the IMS, AOS and RMS been done? If not, plan to spend an extra $3-4K..

Yes IMS, AOS, RMS plus many other maintenance items.

These are all $25-30K cars. You either pay up front, or spend the difference getting them up to speed.

The Aerokit really does wonders for a 996 and is relatively rare, and Seal Gray (I think) is a great color. Sport Classic wheels are also optional but suck to clean. No other info on options, looks to have standard seats. The tiptronic will hurt the value when selling, probably why it hasn’t sold yet. I think the price is reasonable, I’d probably start at $15k and work my way up considering he’s had it listed for a long time.

Ask if it has had the 60k service done, that’s plugs, filters, transmission fluid, oil change. The parts are cheap if you DIY but it’s pricey at the dealership, it’s a good negotiating point.

The car has the same individual body options as mine...Widened rockers and Carrera rear spoiler. Unfortunately Porsche dropped the Aerokit option on the 996.2 in favor of individual options but they no longer offered the Aerokit front bumper. Since the headlight cutouts into the bumper are different you can't add the 996.1 aerokit bumper which IMO looks beautiful on these cars...however a GT3 front lip looks great and is easy to add.

Hard to tell from the photo angle but it sits low enough it might have M030 sport suspension. This plus the Rigid Chassis option if it has it (mine does) really makes the car feel planted.

I agree, bummer on the tiptronic, nobody wants those.

The 3.6L engine in the .2 cars had many improvements such as getting rid of the plastic spark plug tubes and other minor design annoyances.

I’d do it.
Worst case - it’s an awesome daily driver for less than a civic.

Sorry I was referring to resale demand as pointed out by Matt in the post above mine, if it's what you want then go for it!!

Yup, if it's what you want/need then go for it! Just take that into account for resale value. My S8 has a tip, and while I'd still prefer a stick it's a good slushbox.

2002+ are all MOST, only really an issue if you want to seriously upgrade the audio. You can even add Bluetooth and USB without much trouble.

Nice of you to offer, but I'm in Upper Arlington, I think I'm closer than you are.

Looks OK but you really can't make a proper assessment without seeing it in person.

How far away is the car?

It is in Eastern NC, about 2 1/2 hours east of Raleigh.

I have no interest in a 996, next Porsche I plan on acquiring is a post 2009 Cayman.
