Tips on a good movie camera

My 17-year old daughter wants to major in film in college. For now, she wants to make short films with her friends. She needs something better than a smart phone. Recommendations, please.

A Go Pro and gimble

People put together some pretty amazing videos using just them..

It depends on what type of films she wants to make. If she really wants to learn the craft she will need to learn how to block and shoot scenes that contain dialogue. While GoPros are great for action and adventure they are very lacking in lens selection and the most basic tools you will need to tell a story involving humanity that speak.
She should spend some time really thinking about what type of stories she wants to tell and get the appropriate equipment for the job. Renting is not a bad idea to start as we use different camera's for different jobs.

I am not an expert.

However, I hear that many production films use canon SLR's as small, disposable cameras.

This may be a good place to start looking.

My spouse and I have had a very favorable interaction with canon SLR's for general photography.

Good luck!

Panasonic is known to have excellent cameras for video production. Everyone coos over the GH4 for video but I don't know much beyond that. I shoot very specific video like SpaceX launches or Porsche racing and use a cousin of the GH4.

It depends on your willingness to make the most of some basic features you should look for in a camcorder including: Full HD video, microphone jack, headphone jack, variable frame rates and manual controls. Companies like Canon,Go Pro, Samsung and Sony offer excellent camcorders in the $300 to $500 range. I think, it is hard choice for you

Panasonic GH-line is very capable camera with good video features. GH4 is probably overkill for a beginner. I would get her Lumix FZ2500 to begin with.

Consumer-grade camcorders are dying breed and usually lack things video-capable DSLR's have: large chip and fast optics.

I just bought a Nikon D7200 SLR (around $700-$1000) that has pretty impressive video capabilities (and I bought it for still photography) stereo sound, high rez video, adjustable ten thousand ways, special effects, etc.

Exactly. I think I'll just get a GoPro. If she loses interest, then it goes in the Spyder. I also bought her a used bass guitar. Again, it may become mine. I was having fun with it last night.

Part of her education should be for her to research what tools and equipment she needs
...on her own. And to understand diminishing returns and what a budget is.

I rather agree with Sugar on this. Let her do some homework to narrow the choices, and also have skin in the game. Wash cars, clean house, mow lawns to earn 1/2 the cost so she develops an appreciation for it's value. The camera she earns 1/2 of will mean a lot more to her than a better camera that just dropped into her inbox.
