1965 Mustang GT

Finger is on the trigger but I would like to get some opinions from those in the know.
All I know is that I want it!
Supposedly one owner, all original including paint.
She is an A code factory 4 barrel.
Looks to have all the correct GT pieces, but there are a lot of fakes.
Any true way of telling? Been reading a bit but still not 100% sure how to tell.
How much do you think she is worth?

From the hip, that paint looks remarkable for original. I'd ask them to clarify if it is original or "correct".

Can you find someone local to look at it? Any images of the underside?

As you are likely aware, they earned the nickname Rustang and the driving experience of a stock car can be underwhelming but dramatically improved upon with money and research.

I'm sure you already know this but the A code isn't the K code HIPO motor.

Looks fun! I would lose the tacky aftermarket tach ASAP. I also agree that the paint looks too good to be original. But if the price is right, who cares if it’s original paint or an original GT? They made so many Mustangs that they are never going to be valuable, with the exception of truly rare cars like the Shelbys.

Nice, Pony interior too.

For 65, the A Code is second best of the four engine options. Its a 225HP four barrel 289. We have a 66 in the garage.

You can verify a lot about a Mustang with the VIN but I don't think you can verify the GT package from the VIN.

I had done some research on GT's years back and had a 65 Fastback someone had put a bunch of GT parts on. Didn't they come with the Rally Pac on the steering column? There is no way to tell from the VIN.

Looks like '66 gauges unless they put those on some late '65s.

Can't tell from the pics, but does it have the fog lights in the grille? There should be a fog light switch on the bottom of the dash to the left of the steering column if it has fog lights. If fog lights aren't present, check for the hole for the switch in the dash. That can be a tell. 66 dash was black "camera" finish, not wood grain. All the GT's got the round gauge package. The Rallye Pac gauges were an option, not necessarily an indicator of a factory GT.

Fun cruiser on a sunny day. Don't look for real performance in the twisties. After all, they were built on a Falcon platform. Not a problem if you enjoy it for what it is.

A code had a 6,000 rpm tach. K Code had 8,000

Rally pack tac came with a clock and tach

Hagarty gives you a fair price gauge. You can get a limited number of valuations before rhey charge you.

Good call on the fog light switch - it was the one thing I was going to mention, as cloners will often miss that one (well, that and they sometimes like the `66 gas cap better because it actually says GT, where the `65 doesn't).

The only way I ever found to tell for sure was the wiper arm Not all A codes were GTs but that is rare.
Where the wiper arm meets the cog it sits on, it should be installed direct to the protruding cog. If not a GT, there is a chrome band to cover the gap.

This is all correct. Good catch on the fogs

I had 65 Poppy Red K code fastback. No Pony or GT. I took the motor over to Shelby spec.

And the luggage rack on the trunk. Agreed that it looks like a bunch of fun!
