Well....eventually, commonly, discussions end up zeroing in on what it the definition of "xxxxxxx." The two definitions I gave are common, and often in conflict with each other. Casual acquaintances, in both my personal and professional lives, absolutely regard me as an extrovert. I have spoken to groups of a few hundred. I am 110% comfortable, and energized, by rooms of small groups I can glide through and engage in conversation. I am, as I say, gregarious.

And yet, on Myers-Briggs tests, I score right in the middle between Introvert and Extrovert. Why? Because while I am delighted to discuss economics or labor policy or subatomic physics, if you ask be about my relationship with my father or mother or siblings, I will say "good" and offer no details. Those are private thoughts.

Let me put it another way: In social situations, I am like a kid in a candy store. Enjoy it very much. Also, I crave solitude. Days at a time with no human interaction. So.....am I am Introvert or an Extrovert. People around me are certain that I am an Extrovert. That's because they see only my outside.

I was born an shy introvert. Dad was an Air Force pilot, so we moved a LOT.

Every single year in school from first grade to 11th grade I heard the teacher say "Class, this is Glen the new kid"

In the 3rd or 4th grade, I had no friends and was not happy. In the 5th grade, we moved again and I decided I was tired of being shy. At the new school, I walked up to a group of boys and introduced myself. I had dozens of friends. Being shy sucks.

Can't imagine you being shy...my how you've changed :).
I don't consider myself shy...not at all, and think that's a bit different than being introverted. I can see how they go hand in hand for some though.

Just like a piece of metal changes shape and bends when it hits its yield strength, people's personalities also change when they are stressed some where between their yield strength and their breaking point.

If you think you are "both" you might want to evaluate your stress life.

I am not shy; but I will avoid people when I'm in task mode.

I grew up on the road, Glen getting a whole school year in one place would have been far more settled than my situation. I find it easy to start conversation with strangers, but I do tend to avoid people who have their phones out.

I see myself avoiding people as a rule, not the exeption. I don't like those grocery store isle reunions with old aquaintences/friends. I can't stand waiting in lines, or being in busy stores.

I spent Saturday, and Sunday completely alone pulling dead Ash trees out of my woods and cutting them to firewwod lengths.....I truly enjoyed it. I went to dinner with my wife on Saturday night, and was stuck at a table that was near a pizza buffet, with kids, and people constantly walking around our table.....I was ready to leave quickly, give me a booth next time.

How can you spot an extroverted engineer? They look at your shoes while they're talking to you.

I can make an engineer that looks at their own shoes seem extroverted too ;).
