New Iphone help...transferring #s, etc.
I'm lazy....so I come here for help ;). I'm not an Iphone person, but got one for my mom a few years ago (5s), that's on it's last legs....just ordered her a new one. No connections to the Apple cloud except for facetime (yuk). Is there gonna be a way to easily transfer her phone lists, pics, etc. over to the new phone? Methinks I know the answer...please tell me I'm wrong and make my day :). Thanks!
|
If you backup the old phone on iTunes, you can download the backup onto the new one. Its what I did going from a 5 to an 8.
|
Other than making me a boatload of $ over the years...I think Apple sux. There...I feel better now :)

Either iTunes or iCloud are the usual ways but there are some 3rd party apps that will let you transfer data from one phone to the next using your computer for temp storage.

Having spent a career as an IT heavyweight and networking guru...I now travel the information dirt road as a stubborn ol' mule :). And I like it that way... Now get off my lawn! ....unless you can help...then I'll buy ya a lawn chair ;) |
If you're not willing to use Icloud or Itunes or a few 3rd party apps, your options are pretty limited. Get your fingers ready for a workout would be my advice.

Why the aversion to Icloud or Itunes? I'm come from the world of android but my daughter had an Iphone (before I convinced her to switch) and my parents both have Iphones. Itunes or Icloud work really well for backup and transfer.
|
BTW, I think most phones can transfer contacts by bluetooth. You might want to do a search.

Sounds like every conversation with my wife.
Honey, how do I do this? Go here and do this I don’t want to do that, I want to do it another way Ok, but that’s the way it’s done, your other way won’t work But I don’t like your way, I wanna do it my way but don’t know what to do Do you want it to work? Yes Then do it my way I don’t like that way, I’m doing it my way Fine Honey.... Yes dear I did it my way and it’s not working Sigh |
Sigh ;)
Thanks all! I knew what the answer was without even asking here, but appreciate the responses anyways... |
LOL Stomach! Been there, done that!

There is an free app called iMove that runs on a PC to transfer everything from old iPhone to new one if you are trying to stay away from the Apple universe.
But since you state you are lazy and iCloud is free just backup to iCloud, then when you get the new device, restore from iCloud. And go on. The easiest way if an Apple store is close, just take the phones to a "genius" and have them do it for you. I thankfully don't know of any way to just have the old and new phones talk to each other and move everything. I imaging the hackers would have a hayday with that feature if were available. |
Bluetooth is not directional.
Find no instructions for pointing iPhones at each other to copy data. There is an app called bump where you can send a single file an contact. But it is not to copy all the data and settings from one phone to another. |
I always have the shop where I buy the iphone transfer the contact list over to the new phone.
No itunes or icloud for me. |
My email/calendar/contacts/notes sync with my gmail account.(which is actually my own domain, serviced by google) Don't need to use itunes.
However, itunes is simpler and easier. And will sync/backup apps, pics and text messages. I don't understand the reluctance. |
You can simply back up her old phone to your PC through iTunes and then load the new phone from that backup and it will transfer over all of the settings/contacts, etc. That way, nothing goes out into the cloud.
|
AT&T offers the Mobile Transfer app. It transfers all contacts, etc to a new phone via bluetooth between the phones. No PC/itunes/etc required.

You'd say "Good luck with your problem *somewhere else*". Care to explain why or would you just like to everyone to keep throwing out ideas until you find someone what meets your unexplained mystery criteria? I can only assume you want to do it "off grid" with a serial cable? Not happening unless you want to do a lot of typing... |
Quit throwing out ideas guys....believe me, I understand what y'all are saying. I "know" why the suggestions offered are not an option for me....even though you guys don't ;). I knew I was asking for the impossible before even starting this thread...but did anyways....sometimes a rabbit comes out of the hat. Thread's over...but carry on....:)

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe you might be able to do it "offline" via a temporary sim card swap. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202340 |

If it's Verizon it can have the SIM slot but not necc the card. |
I'll look into the SIM aspect for sure....thanks all! Now I have another question (lazee I are :)). I just assumed the 5s battery wasn't replacable, based upon stuff I read (probably here) over the years....had to have been true...read it on the Internet....did I mss that boat too? The new phone was ordered Sun. when mom described the symptoms....I thought it was virtually dead. It wasn't until later that she told me she'd been yakking with her older sis for 1.5 hrs the day before and didn't recharge it....wimmins ;)

Bit of a fiddly one to work on. Buy the battery kit from iFixit. Spend the couple of extra bucks for the full kit with tools and not just the bare battery. It's worth it, trust me. https://www.ifixit.com/Store/iPhone/iPhone-5s-Replacement-Battery/IF124-002-4 |
Dayum...I should've asked the braintrust before now ;). I already have a new one for mom on the way...at least it was cheap (175).... live and learn...thanks mucho!
|
Does the new battery program at Apple replace the 5's battery for $28?
|
If you want to stay away from Big Brother, you can't have an Iphone. Now you are just putting lipstick on a pig by not using Itunes to transfer.
G |
If you have a pc, install itunes. Backup the old phone with iTunes. Restore to the new phone with iTunes. Delete iTunes. No Big Brothers.
The iMove app for PC would do the same thing copying phone to phone without creating any kind of big brother account. |

She uses just the phone and facebook....and both of those are associated to me. I sold my soul to the devil (Google) before most of you guys had even heard of it....purely by chance. Knew one of the very first emoloyees casually, and then his girl friend (now wife) roped a bunch of us in when gmail was still in beta...if I only knew then....alas, she was cute...what could it hurt ;). Cool couple though... |

No pc anymore, no bluetooth, no nada...but I'm good ;). I'll investigate the SIM aspect when I get the new phone (and have hers) or just enter them manually...like I did all her others. I've spent more time on this thread than it will take to do that...really no biggy. I do thank you all for your suggestions! |

If you are close to an Apple store they can transfer your contacts from your old phone to the new one. They did it for me when they transferred contacts from a blackberry to my 5s. |
