62 years ago today
My father , mother and brother stepped off the ship that brought them over from Germany . They landed in N.Y. and quickly became U.S. citizens . My dad was a watch maker by trade but was hired by IBM to be a machinist , technically he became a tool and die maker . He ended up working for IBM for 30 + years before retiring . My mom was the typical stay at home mom . My brother a real smart guy ended up in the Navy's nuke program on a submarine then college then a distinguished career with GE/BAE and he retired 2 years ago . I'm the mutt of the family
![]() While my mom and dad are now deceased I'm proud of our family , they came to the U.S. for the American dream . They worked hard , NEVER asking for a handout and did everything legally and above board ......... the way it SHOULD be done . They learned the language and they were VERY proud to be Americans . I am the man I am today because of their work ethic they never allowed me to be lazy ![]()

Get off my lawn!

I will toast them with a beer tonight.
My mom's grandfather on her mom's side was born in Germany. Came to America as an infant. He made the 1889 land run and settled in northern Oklahoma. My dad's grandmother on his mom's side came to America from a different area of Germany and settled in PA, but moved to Oklahoma in 1900. They all stayed in Oklahoma through the dust bowl days. Imagine dust blowing everywhere, and 100+ temps for over 30 days in a row, and no electricity or running water.

My wife's mother, grandmother, aunt and uncle came to 'Merica on the USNS General M.L. Hersey in 1950, and all became US citizens ASAP.
They supported themselves and never asked for a handout, much like in the OP. Good people. ![]() ![]() |

I'm not the type of guy that has many regrets but the one thing I regret is I never learned the German language when in high school . I know some German because when my parents were angry with me the yelling was generally in German

Your family assimilated. Today, both legal and illegal immigrants want the USA to change for them.

Both sides of my family (German, near Stuttgart) assimilated the USA when it came along

That is the story of my father's parents, just fifty years later. They became American, no hyphen.
