Do you guys still use e bay ?

Im building a couple of older dirt bikes. I don't think this could done without e bay. I still buy a ton of stuff there. I don't sell much anymore, but at one time, had a side biz slinging porsche parts , mostly on E bay. We did well at it . As soon as I cannot find something within my normal circles, ebay is my next go to .

cabmandone 03-09-2018 03:44 AM

Usually I find the part number for what I'm looking for and once I do that I have a lot more options than just ebay.
When they raised their final value fees on construction equipment to 10% of the selling price I made a conscious effort to not buy anything on ebay and obviously stopped listing things there as well.

Steve F 03-09-2018 03:51 AM

I was looking for a kick starter shaft for a 1975 Husky so I could modify it to use as a broach for my new and improved kick starter I machined .....$12 on e-bay:)

Baz 03-09-2018 04:01 AM

I use it all the time Fred - it's an amazing resource if used properly!

Just yesterday received a shipment of sandpaper, transformers, and flash drives.

I used to sell on it too but haven't in many years. But one day plan to devote more time to it as I shrink the hamster wheel.

hardflex 03-09-2018 04:28 AM

All the time. Search, click click click it's on the way.

Does anybody do the timed auctions any more? Do they still have them?

drkshdw 03-09-2018 04:38 AM

Like fastfred I used to sell on there as a side biz as well. Quit in 2011 but started back up last year.

I used to sell a lot. And made decent money back then. Now my stuff just sits. For half the price. For some stuff it's worth it but Porsche parts ain't it. Too many being parted and not enough being saved (or the economy isn't doing as well as the media makes you think it is).

As a buyer, I used Amazon more now or go through the forums. Occasionally the random thing on ebay but not often. And I get rid of all the auctions. Ain't nobody got time for auctions anymore.

gr8fl4porsche 03-09-2018 04:46 AM

I used to regularly use Amazon for typical new goods.

Used has always been ebay.

Now that Amazon charges sales tax in my state. Ebay is 10% cheaper quite often. I use the bay more than ever.

Holger 03-09-2018 04:47 AM

Amazon and ebay all the time ... but no auctions!

asphaltgambler 03-09-2018 04:54 AM

Yes - all the time - buying and selling

porsche930dude 03-09-2018 04:57 AM

Everything on ebay. If I cant buy It there I usually dont buy it. Also sell around 60 items a month both buy it now and auction. Its all about the shipping price you have to send it as cheap as possible and shipping it through ebay lets you do that

drcoastline 03-09-2018 05:11 AM

I use it all the time. Not only to buy but as a negotiating tool if buying someplace else. When I do buy I only buy from US sellers.

stevej37 03-09-2018 05:12 AM

I use ebay often.
Most times..no problem, but I have had issues with their vehicle filtering feature. The last two times buying, it didn't match my vehicle..had to return for the correct one.
That may not be ebays fault..prob the supplier.

BeyGon 03-09-2018 05:18 AM

I have been selling on e bay a bit lately, clearing out the garage, not a lot, just a couple thousand bucks but the good thing is cleaning up stuff. I like it, and even some on Craigslist, seems to work.

JackDidley 03-09-2018 05:20 AM

I do not sell anymore but I sort of buy a lot. Ordered a gallon of Por15 last night. Need to do the frame on a truck I am putting together.

VincentVega 03-09-2018 05:29 AM

I was selling a little but its been a while. Just enough $$ to seem worthwhile until a bad buyer soured me. I still buy occasionally, picked up a print for cheap and the occasional car or boat part. Pool chems are sometimes a great deal.

ckelly78z 03-09-2018 05:38 AM

Found most of what I needed for my son's 1988 Honda XR200, and my 2003 Kawasaki KLR250 on ebay. I used to part out, and sell lots of Datsun Z parts.....wish now, I would have kept half of those cars the way the prices are skyrocketing. I don't think I ever had a bad experience with PayPal over 175 transactions.

HardDrive 03-09-2018 06:06 AM

Yup, I still use it.

Tidybuoy 03-09-2018 06:10 AM

I still use eBay but definitely less than I used to. I hate all the commercial crap and duplicate things. I wish it was like the old days when it was mostly garage sale type stuff.

red-beard 03-09-2018 06:12 AM

Mostly for harder to find parts, or used equipment for parts.

I have a 3 phase 600V disconnect. The handle is broken. A replacement is $600 for the HANDLE! The list price for the disconnect is $1200.

A used disconnect runs around $99, and I'm only going to use the handle.

This....

I still buy, mostly golf stuff a gun parts, rarely sell anymore.

jcommin 03-09-2018 06:59 AM

Include me in the "I still use it but not like I use too".

scottmandue 03-09-2018 08:16 AM

As Amazon has started to fail more and more I have gone to checking eBay but will go with whichever has the best deal.

R K T 03-09-2018 09:03 AM

I was just on ebay before I saw this thread. Checked my "watch" and "selling" items.
I sell a lot of Porsche models and have been since 1998 and never had a bad experience!

svandamme 03-09-2018 09:15 AM

always checking amazon, ebay google for whatever brings me the best deal.
Ebay still does the trick for many things.

+1 here. Too much trouble. Some of the stuff I used to sell for $20 or $25 I just give to charity now.

LakeCleElum 03-09-2018 08:24 PM

Search both Ebay and Amazon......About 50/50
I'm a SNIPER..........I never bid till 10 seconds to go........

Scott R 03-09-2018 08:47 PM

I had to today, I need a factory service manual for my XJS, I'm not going to find that on Amazon.

Indescikov 03-10-2018 03:55 AM

If you are selling, Ebay has gotten very expensive especially paired with Paypal

sand_man 03-10-2018 04:43 AM

I buy lot's of stuff on eBay, but have never sold anything...

unclebilly 03-10-2018 04:44 AM

I used to sell a lot on there. My account goes back to 1998.

I used to buy a lot too but there are too many scammers on there now and it is no longer a community.

I got an Amazon Prime account when Grand Tour came out and Amazon is now my go-to for buying anything. If I am in a store, I almost always check to see how much it is on Amazon before buying...

tabs 03-10-2018 04:32 PM

Flea bay is the flea market for the world. It also turns out to be a great research base for long out of production products and companies that have bitten the dust.

@17% is the vigourish charged by bay and pay.

Wow. An EARLY adopter. My account goes back to 2001. I've had good luck with buying obscure and used items from ebay
Several years ago I had an issue with them selling magazines subscriptions which had me dealing with a vice president of something before we got it resolved. I am suspicious of ebay and its sellers, but still use it from time to time.

Ayles 03-10-2018 06:52 PM

I sell and buy there regularly. The fees you pay along the way almost make it not worth the trouble. Had my account since 1999.

I have mostly used it to buy a lot of hard to find records and small collectibles over the years.

That's what makes it more economical to donate some stuff to charity. You don't make any money, but you don't deal with packing and shipping and ebay's cut of your deal.

.

I've also been a member since 1999. Use it much less than I used to....and mostly for buying.

That being said, I think it's a good venue for selling collector items. The fees have gotten so high that it makes selling "normal" stuff difficult.

sc_rufctr 03-11-2018 05:39 AM

I mostly buy local but sometimes I want/need something that is only available on Ebay.

I've been using it for well over 10 years. My Ebay score is 143 total so not a lot but I've only had two transactions go South and both times I got my money back. And Paypal has been great. No issues so far.

slow&rusty 03-11-2018 06:41 AM

I use ebay extensively to maintain my cars and use it to price check several online vendors including Pelican.

sand_man 03-11-2018 08:15 AM

I love it when eBay vendors offer the USPS "Fast and Free" shipping option. I'm not currently using Amazon Prime (didn't renew in 2018) and most of the things I find on eBay end up being slightly cheaper than Amazon. But I often compare the two.

I've found Pelican is often cheaper for OEM parts than a lot of Ebay sellers. I've even seen OEM new from Pelican cheaper than second hand parts on Ebay.

(Including conversion from US dollars & shipping to Aus)

stevej37 03-11-2018 08:37 AM

If a person is an Amazon Prime member, it's usually much cheaper than Ebay.
Unless it's a small very lightweight package.
