Jazz. I don't get it.

Sounds like self indulgence to me. Every musician doing his/her own thing. No rhythm or melody. Was George Benson a jazz musician? His music and vocals I like. Must be a different kind of jazz from the uncoordinated noise I don't appreciate.

When I think of jazz, I've been to Nawlin's a bunch...that I get :).

some of it is good, some sounds like everyone is playing a different song.
as a musician I must give it to them that they can keep time and keep track of where they in that mess.

I use to be FOH guy at a very large church. when someone would make a mistake I would turn t the other guy back there would always say, "their playing jazz"

When I read the title...I thought it was about my Honda Jazz/Fit.
Otherwise..I don't get it either...have never really liked jazz.

I listen to a lot of music (everything from Simon and Garfunkel to Wolf Alice and Starcrawler) and I don't get jazz. For me, my ear learns to anticipate the next note in a rhythm or melody and in "pop" music, 99% of the time that next note "feels" right. In jazz - to my ear - that next note doesn't feel right. It almost makes me uncomfortable.

Interesting.

Wolf Alice (check out "Your Love's Whore") and Starcrawler (check out "Let Her Be"). Awesome stuff. SmileWavy

There is good jazz out there that is not fusion, the early Chick Correa and Return to Forever come to mind first.

It's like modern art: if you don't like it, you're obviously an uncultured philistine

Hancock's Maiden Voyage is a good gateway drug

Jazz and it's cousin the Blues is something that I never quite "got" either. My parents loved Jazz so I heard it a lot as a kid. I don't dislike it like I do (c)RAP or nasal Country and Western, but I just never became a fan.

I think there is some cross over from jazz to blues and funk. Sometimes I just know what I like and I am not even sure what it is called.

Cars, I don't get them. That's a reasonable analogy. There are so many types of jazz, each unique. So you can say you don't like fusion in the same way you can say you don't like sedans. You might like convertibles and you might like Big Band or Swing.

I get the point you are trying to make but it's not like modern art at all. Modern art typically requires no skill or talent. You don't practice to make better modern art. It's basically rubbish.

Jazz, even the kind you don't like, requires talent and skill and practice.

Some jazz is great. Some are not (bebop).

Here's some Sidney Bechet for ya.

Dixieland jazz drives me nuts. Miles Davis does not.

asphaltgambler 03-13-2018 06:28 AM

I gravitate to progressive jazz when relaxing.......

GG Allin 03-13-2018 07:00 AM

I've been to Green Mill in Chicago a few times. It's as if the band is up there and each member is playing a different song. I don't get it either.
