common sense.

i might not be that "book smart". i get by.

but i think i am fairly strong in the common sense department. i've seen people buckled by relatively easy problems.

we have a newly hired kid in the office. damn professor when it comes to books..but yeowzah!! he didnt leave much brain-space for common sense. super nice, super personable.

i think i would let him go before his probation expired, but not my call.

Unfortunately this kind of person is kept on lots of times by supervisors that have marginal common sense. They have difficulty identifying the problem and difficulty understanding why there are problems associated with this person later on.

my nephew and his wife are like that. EXREEEEEEMMMLY smart but not enough sense to come in outta the rain unless its in a book.

I have always had great common sense. I think I learned it at an early age from taking things apart and figuring out how they work. still do it, and some things still don't go back together.

common sense does not seem as sharp as I am getting older. simple problems are passing me by.

my sister: super genius..she would/should be a super villian.

but not so common sense smart.

we jumped off this cruise ship and rented a pair of tiny-ass Renaults to drive to Mt Olympus. the renter asked me if i wanted a map.."he was down to his last copy"..i looked at it and it was exactly one straight run and a right turn. i said, "no, i got this"

my BIL and Sister took the last map..and it was just a piece of white paper with a line and a right turn. i kid you not..we get to the turn and THEY GO LEFT!! WTF? i mean there is a line of damn buses going up the hill with MT OLYMPUS on that sign up front..you had to be a moron to get lost.

well, i won that road race. i bet they had the map held sideways. they were the only car to take that left. worst vacation in my entire life. she yelled at me for getting her lost.

Some folks are just naturally good at navigation. I read once of a small sailboat that had no business in an open ocean making the passage from L.A. to Honolulu. All the young guy had on board for navigation was a cheap compass and a high school Atlas.

Asked how he did it...he'd take bearings off the jets flying overhead, knowing they had to be Hawaii bound.

15 years old...returned to parents.

Critical thinking is not in very many curricula. A kid I know was rounding out the requirements for his certification at community college. He had to take some kind of sociology classes or whatever they call them now. He said his instructor said racial differences are not physical attributes but rather social constructs.

I asked the kid then how come some people are black and some are white?

That's the first time I ever witnessed somebody's thinking make them go cross-eyed

Every time I read one of these 'common sense' threads I'm reminded of the story my brother once told me. He was going to grad school at UC Berkeley and had a research assistantship at Lawrence Livermore Labs up back of the school. He thus had complete run of their machine shop. One day he's up there and walks by a Phd student standing at a drill press. He's got a tap chucked in the drill and a piece of metal on the table. My brother asked him what he was doing. "I'm going to tap a hole in the metal so I can screw a bolt in."
Uh, don't you think you should drill the hole first, then tap it?
No, I thought that's what the tap is for.

You get the idea.
The guy was amazed that my bro knew what size tap drill to use off the top of his head. He even showed him how to use the tap drill chart that was hanging on the wall right next to the drill press.

What is it they say Phd stands for?
Oh yeah, Piled Higher and Deeper.

I'm gonna have to show my son that quote! I was really hoping that was something he'd outgrow. I have a box of stuff in my shop that he has torn apart but never put back together.

Mrs. Lee drove my car to the airport, long term parking, while I was on a business trip, as I was coming home the next day and she was flying out the previous night. I told her to take a very clear photo of the parking row and space number, so I could find my car when I arrived. This is what she texted me after she had already gotten onto the plane.

Now, this row is only about 2000' long and I was arriving long after dark. What could go wrong? I knew from the time stamp and position of the sun which direction she was facing when she took it. That got me within range so I could see the lights flash when I hit the key fob. Had I done this to her, I'd have to get the car myself after paying for a week of parking.

One of my former co-workers was genius level with book learning. He could describe in detail how a match works and the combustion process. He could not start a campfire or charcoal grill to save his life.

Vash, hopefully the kids level of common sense will improve in a reasonable amount of time.
And he proves to be of value to the team.
Who knows you may learn something from him.

You're never going to know how to fix something unless you break it and find out how it works...

It is also common sense not to post on a public forum who you'd let go before their probation time is over!

This is classic.

Most of us would scrub the system down to make sure the pic made sense given someone was depending on your data.

Wimmins. What you gonna do?

Pal who hangs out with me at the shop barks that he can't get the grease gun off a fitting on his front end. It was the caliper bleeder. He's 50.

I spent a week at summer camp last year with the Boy Scouts.
I was assigned to a group that included the “Senior Patrol Leade”, who should have his act together.
The kid couldn’t make a grilled cheese sandwich.
I saw about six different versions of how to get that problem solved. None were even remotely close.
As my son says - “dad took lots of walks by himself that week.” The kid is only 11, but wise beyond his years.

Just because it is called Common Sense does not mean it is common knowledge or skill.

Ignorant and Stupid neither may know how to do something. Stupid don't learn. The Ignorant can be trained.

This kid is an X-Box star. He needs to step on his you know what a few times and that will get his brain working as to every day problems.

I say don't fire him if he is that sharp.
