so my urine is dayglow magenta!

i have been on a Beets kick lately.

i am pickling them by the bushel loads. who knew my elderly neighbors love a refrigerator pickle beet?

i just found out they play awesome with briney olives. my local farmers at the markets must find them easy to grow, because they are plentiful.

olives+Beet salad for lunch today.

if there was ever a day to get called in for a mandatory drug test, today would be it..haha.

i just tried to pass some out at work and my office mates looked like i tried to feed them jarred dog turds.

you like beets? the color MUST mean they are good for us.

i've never had that beet soup. i might seek out a Russian restaurant.

I like the charred grilled beets in moderation.

BBQ Beets: Coal-Cooked Beets - Pham Fatale

Quote:
Here's another simple summer vegetable recipe using the barbecue grill. Whole unpeeled beets are placed over the coals of the barbecue grill and cooked until the skin is burnt. I let the beets cool to room temperature and seasoned them with a few fresh herbs, balsamic vinegar and extra-virgin olive oil.
You have to watch the salt content of the canned and pickled stuff.

I've never had them pickled, but I'm curious. I've had the juice, and I've had them roasted. I guess I've probably had them pickled out of a jar/can on a salad, but I'm sure that's nothing like you're eating. THey are great for blood pressure. I think I've read that beets or beet juice will drop your BP by 10 points or something like that.

We've been making our own fermented foods for a while. I've had particularly good luck with sauerkraut, I've made some regular pickles, yogurt, kefir, kombucha, and the other day as an experiment, I fermented some beans. I hear that beets are a great addition to sauerkraut, but i always forget until it's too late.

I've never experienced the magenta urine, but you can poo a color that you wouldn't normally want to if you eat enough beet products. Fortunately, beets don't seem to stain stuff.

LOL

Several years ago I was "dropping the kids off at the pool" and noticed a ton of red in the bowl. As it is now completely acceptable to surf web while deuceing, I had googled WebMD about all the potential a$$ maladies one could be dying of. It was then I realized I had a beet salad the night before.

I also love beets, wife thinks I'm nuts. Any special pickle recipe or just the usual water, vinegar, salt?

dont forget sugar.

and after the beets are gone, you can soak hardboil (peeled) eggs and make a visually fantastic salad topper.

Try making borscht soup. Beetroot is one of the main ingredients...

I had a fluorescein angiogram a couple of years ago, and my pee was flourescent yellow with a much higher specific gravity - kinda like nyquil

as kids we had to go to anual medical exam via school.
totally boring and BS, so i took a gram of methyleen blue (methylthioninium chloride)from my old chemical play set..
stuffed it in an envelope, and smuggled it in.

So when the nurse told me to piss in the cup, i did.. and while she was not watching, chucked the methylene blue powder in there.

So you got the blue powder chunks in the yellow piss, swirling, turning green.
And a 14 year old that hands that over to the nurse with a straight face going "no idea wtf this is"..

Nurse freaked out and threw a fit..
The Doc came to look, and quickly put 2 & 2 together.. and had a chuckle.

Did get suspension over it.. but totally worth it

This is really good info Vash. I think I'll chow down on beet and asparagus salad for several days before the next time I go in for a drug test.
