I got severely told off.

Last night I was with friends at an inexpensive Chinese restaurant and everyone kept raving on about what a nice looking meal the Chinese guy at the next table had.

The guy half finished his meal and left so I got up, with my own knife an fork, and finished off his meal. Sure I was showing off, trying to attract attention etc, but wow did I get a hostile response from everyone. And I was told the lady who runs the place didn't look too impressed either.

I said "I'm a Douglas, us Scots have been eating pig's guts for 600 years, what's the harm in finishing off someone else's meal."

In Chinese culture, I'm told, it's bad manners to eat everything on the plate. And it appears it's bad manners to eat everything on someone else's plate too.

Cleaning your plate is not bad manners. It’s why I’m fat. I’m “polite”. Ha ha.

Not something I would do. I don’t know of a restaurant in the US where that would be seen as acceptable.

Next time, if you don't finish theirs, ask for a to-go box!

I have a hippy buddy who does shchit like that, He would go up to people leaving their tables, and ask them if they would mind if he got their leftovers. He would then take it home to whatever transient he had living with him at the time, Weird, but I sort of get it.
I mean, if you think about it, we do waste enough food to feed a lot of hungry people . s
His joke was always " hey, how do you know if a deadhead spent the night at your house last night? Answer--- He's still there "

You were just being a bit cheeky. People really need to relax.

Good on ya, Bill!

People absolutely do need to chill.

And BTW......I have two dogs who never turn their nose up at leftovers....no matter whose leftovers they are!

Thanks, yes it was me trying to be funny. GF is from a poor background so I guess she has spent her whole life doing the right thing. So she was particularly miffed by this.

I usually stroll down the bar at closing time and finish off the dregs.

Sometimes it's chewy, but hey!

I had a friend that would do that. His favorite was buffets because people would leave everything. He even carried a man-bag with tupperware containers in it. It came from his childhood when his mother would work truck stops (lot lizard) to get money his dad would take and spend on booze between odd jobs. Booze and smokes before food and shelter.

To the day he died, he did that. He wasn't poor as an adult but his childhood made him the guy he was. He would yell at me for leaving food on a plate. Except in Chinese restaurants because when he was stationed in Japan he told me it was customary to leave one bite on the plate. Something to do with Asian cultures not thinking they fed you enough if you ate every last bite so to tell them you were satisfied, that's what you did.

I guess if I had to do it, I would. I'm thankful though that I don't have to.

Reminds me of when I was 15 and washing dishes in a bar (back in the 70’s).

We’d pour all the left over beer in one bottle and drink it.

Good times!

Please don't throw cigarette butts in the urinal. It makes them wet and sticky, and hard to light.

I washed pots n' pans in the dorm kitchen in college.

After that I was the night clean up crew in the meatcutting department of a grocery store.

In those days I had an allowance of $5/week. Tuesdays was beer and dogs night. Pitcher of yellow swill and a dog was $1.10. Thursday's was $.35 Whopper night. Three of 'em for a buck and a nickel.

I'll never forget those days. Come to think of it, that's probally why I go to Costco when I'm hungry.

Did the Chinese place serve family style. If so, then what is so bad?
