Is it worth it to re-dry dessicant?
I’m about to open a big package. It goes into an air filter on the hand pump for my air-rifle. I’m been an idiot, and I forgot to use it. Probably took years off my air canister on the rifle. Unless it’s aluminum.
Got to thinking. It’s wet here in CA during the spring. It’s just gonna start sucking in moisture. Can I just dry it regularly in my oven? Or should I just buy a jug of it? I’ve never tried recharging the stuff.

I keep my silica gel in glass jars that I drilled holed in the lids. I keep several in every safe. In the middle of winter, I put them on a cookie sheet (that I use only for this) and dry them by putting them in the oven at 250º for 12 hours. The cheapy packets that come in shoes and such are not suitable for reuse as the glue will melt and the gel bead will go everywhere.

I do believe some newer desicants can be nuked to dry them out to reuse.
Check the label. |

I use this style. Turns purple, throw it in the oven until it turns blue again.

So what causes the moisture in safes?
Is it due to a temperature differential between the interior of the safe and the room the safe is in, or changing room temps, or what exactly causes it? |

Silica cat litter, put it in an old sock.
I put a sock in each of my cars for winter storage. Don't knock the sock around as dust will come out, but it's not really an issue.

No. Purchase price of $.66 a desiccate bag (sock), it is not worth it. Last time I needed a desiccate bag (wet carpet in car), I cut open a new accumulator (ford truck) I had laying around.
There are vehicles that have a desiccant bag in a drier canister on the side of the condenser, and they should be large enough for humidity in a safe.

You can buy silica gel in bulk from craft stores for very cheap.
