Do you have to get your key programmed at the Porsche Dealership?

Saw something mentioned on another board about a 2008 Cayman where the guy had one key, and the dealership wanted a good chunk of dough to program it for him. Is there a way to do it yourself?

Do a search it's been discussed to death.........no easy DIY solution you have to spend the $$$ with Porsche .

Check with a locksmith. Got my spare key for my truck for $150, including the key/fob. They had a programmer, don't know if they do Porsche.

I have an Autel Maxisys that I have programmed a number of Porsche fobs and keys with, Range Rovers, Volkswagen, in fact I don't think there is any key it can't do.

Yep, if I have 2 keys for my '08 Box and want a 3rd, I have to take both of my keys to the dealer, and from what I understand, they have to program all 3 keys.

It's almost the same with your MSM. With the MSM, if you only have 1 key, then to program a second, you have to take it to the dealer. If, however, you have 2 keys and you want to program a third, then you can do it yourself.

All of that is null and void if you have a fancy key programmer.

An independent that has a PIWIS ( Like me) can do it as well
It does take the tech most of an hour and you need the codes

I got two keys with the Miata, programmed a third, so if'n I lose it, I can do it myself still.

Bought a Cayenne Turbo. Seller sent me one key and a Blank.
Dealer would not cut blank. Would have to buy key from them to get it cut and programed.
Did some searching and found a local locksmith that did car keys that cut and programmed the key. It was cheaper they buying another key from the dealer, but not by much.

An independent (like myself also) can do it (as mentioned) with our pwis IF Porsche will give us the immobilizer and security code pins..... Porsche can be flaky and don't always cooperate turning over that info....

Phone around the independants, check craiglist, here there's a guy that does fobs for half the price of the dealer.
I have a durametric pro, it does all I need but it won't do keys.

But you could have done away with the weak satisfied customer part.

You could have just said we sell this, as long as the privilege isn't abused, relevant for our cars, on topic and our host doesn't sell the product, it's mostly accepted.

You're product must work good, because around here if it doesn't you'll only make the one sale.
$400 small and mid size shops may have interest, but too much for the car owner. For $400 you should also make a basic case for the board, car guys not computer/electronics guys.

I bought a blank key, tried to program it and couldn't so returned to dealer to program it. They wouldn't- until I proved I bought the blank from them.

We can program in house. We either buy the blank pre cut to the VIN or have it cut locally. We have a great relationship with the local Porsche Dealer (1 block away) and they graciously provide us the programming codes.

No programming needed on the 356.

Did have to get a locksmith to file down larger keys to make blanks so he could cut keys for the 356 (had it done for my dad, fathers day mid 80s)

Seems like you'd have to program an awful lot of keys to justify the price of the Autel Maxisys and accessories needed. Nice tool for an independent shop though.

if you have the old key
the RFID pill is programmed to your car

you can transplant that to a new key
and if the pill is good, no Porsche needed.

The Key fob is a rolling codes system.
That one can be learned to your car, by yourself, it's in the manual.


So keyfob broken
get new key or other key, transplant the mechanical key blade
transplant the RFID pill (might need dremel to cut it out)

Mechanical key will work if not damaged
RFID pill will work if not damaged
Rolling code will need to be re-learned via user manual method


The RFID pill is the only thing that needs to be learned to your DME
That's the only part that requires PIWIS as far as I know


Obviously lost key is lost RFID and then you are indeed screwed

I've just ordered a key via another dealer that sells/services Porsche - Its cheaper than Porsche but the key is coming from Porsche

They told me it's partially done at Porsche, then the remaining programming with the car, and software
