Late Model Jags - advice needed
Looking for a little help/advice.
I typically do a ton of research (maybe too much at times) before buying cars. However, aside from lusting after XKE's and the like I really don't know much about this marque. I know Ford owned Jag for a while, and I heard they resolved some of their longstanding issues. And now I believe they are owned by an Indian company. Aside from that, I know very little about them, and I don't have any friends or relatives who've actually owned one. Mrs. Daepp has always liked the look of the Jags - and now she's has asked, for the 1st time in our 30 year marriage, for a nice car of her choosing, and she'd like an XJ-R; white, si vous plait. And whadaya know, the local dealer has a 2016 with 16K miles, the balance of the factory to 60,000 miles, asking $68K. Our closest dealer has a 2016 with a V6 and supercharger. It's rear wheel drive and makes about 340 hp. It appears to be all aluminum, but it still weighs a bit over 4000 lbs. MPG isn't very good, but she only drives about 5,000 miles a year. So of course I'm wondering most about reliability and safety. But also any personal experiences would really be appreciated + anything else the PPOT brin trust may kow about these felines. TIA, David

It will come down to what has the most appeal.
Jaguar has been very good with taking care of anything that happens in warranty without fuss.(Unlike Porsche). The human/electronic interface has a little more lag from when you hit a button to when you get a result compared to other car manufacturers. Most of the problems this car has had with the new engine have been sorted out by 2013+. (Namely water pump) They are designed for longer service intervals, and hold up well to use. Like any modern car, if it doesn't get driven for sustained periods low battery can cause problems. A BMW or Mercedes will be a superior car when new in performance/gadgets, but the Jaguar is the tougher simpler car if you want long term ownership. I have a 2009 XK which has the previous generation of engine. It is nine years old and has not needed anything in those nine years but fluids/filters/tires and light bulbs. With the newer generation engine you have direct injection; so at some point carbon build up will need to be cleaned. Last edited by Tervuren; 03-28-2018 at 04:20 AM.. |

I have never owned an aluminum bodied or aluminum body+chassis car, so I am interested in safety/crash info. But I have been unable to find even a bit of Jaguar or government safety rating info.

You should be able to find crash information on its brother car, the XF.

The real difficulty with an aluminum construction will be repairs after a crash.
The ultimate safety is how it is driven. |

FWIW, my boss has had one of their new SUV things for about a year. Trouble free so far, surprisingly.

I have an F-type R. Pretty bullet proof, and I use it as daily driver. Some (very few) of the finishing touches are a bit rough for the price point. Had a rattle in the sub-woofer and door. Had similar issues with new Porsches and Merecedes, so not a huge deal.
The 5.0l supercharged engine is the one to get. Rocket fast when you want it, but docile around town if needed. 20mpg city, 25 on the highway (it lives at 85). The transmissions are nothing exotic, ZF converter autobox with paddles, but so much torque that there is no lag, and shifts are instant. The leather is nice, but soft in R trim, it'll crease with time. Decent features; the infotainment system is a bit last gen. ![]()

what the others have said. Audi has been all alu for years with the A8 and its respected. Feels amazingly agile for a car of its bulk too. But don't dent it...

Never been much of a Jag guy, but interested to learn on improvements that the company has made to stay abreast with the German rivals. This should be an interesting thread.

All the info you need at https://www.jaguarforums.com/.
Incidentally, I'm "On_a_Jag" there as there was already a Zeke registered. |

I’m thinking about a XK/XKR. I’m trying to wait till next year. I go back and forth between the jag convertable and a BMW 6 series.

When it comes to the convertible I'm partial to the 2008 Portfolio XKR.
The special wheels and real billet aluminum side vents match very well. Brakes are the best equipped to any Jaguar except the Carbon Ceramic GT. 2010+ have bigger rotors but not as nice of calipers. I have a LOT of faith in the 4.2L drive train of the 2008, a little less faith in the 5.0L drivetrain of 2010+. The 2010 XKR is a significant performance upgrade over the older car, faster transmission, etc... Makes it a bit of a tough call between them. If they made them with a manual I'd likely have bought or be buying my second Jaguar. As it is automatic only I may stick with just one. Last edited by Tervuren; 03-31-2018 at 07:09 PM.. |
