Steel buildings

Anyone install a General Steel building?

https://gensteel.com/

Have a quote for a 40x60x12 at the eaves, 2 garage doors, 1 walk-through door. $27K delivered.

Any experience? Others to consider? Should I go 16' high?

I have a future steel building for my shop.

Make sure their quote includes the baseplate connectors. They like to come back after they have your deposit and recommend that you have these (which should be included).

Think about how you are going to insulate it. I wish I did post and beam.

Good advice on the connectors, thanks. Much of it will be purely for storing cars but I would like an insulated bay.

Post and beam looks to be 5 to 10X the price but does look beautiful. This is more utilitarian.

5 years ago, we built a 104'x60' pole barn for a non-insulated, horse riding arena/stalls that has the trusses 14' off the floor/ground. We spent a total of about $40K on buying it, having it delivered (in pieces on the back of a semi trailer), and for some help in erecting it (local construction contractor who helped with the trusses, and skinning the roof.

I would say there is no reason in having the trusses more than 12' off the ground unless you were thinking of a walkable storage loft (about 5' high just under the trusses on our 14' height).

I am sure you are aware, but just in case: Make sure the kit meets local codes, etc.

40 by 60 is nice!

You might want to get a quote or two from local pole barn contractors if you have them . A pole barn can be a quick starting point for an enclosed building . Could be a good data point for you to make your final decision .

What gauge and type of panels for the siding and roof?

Are you insulating? if so, what material--vinyl backed roll insulation works well if you are running an interior liner panel

Does the quoted price include stamped installation drawings?

Does quoted price include all accessories--gutters, downspouts, flashings, fasteners, tape caulking, tube caulking?

What are you using for air movement?

This shows the inside of my shop as we were doing the floor. It has since been spray foamed and the hoist installed, etc.

Structures which are pre-fabed always interest me. Are quonset huts still available?
Have you checked out jean Prouvé 1950's French buildings? They had the same
quick -build intent ( pun not intended ) but are now sort of million dollar collectors items (!)

If you're thinking of putting a lift in, you might want to go a bit taller.

Consider running pipes in the slab to heat it. Ensure you have adequate height to install a lift, should you decide you wish to do so.

Agree my 2 post measured out at 11'-11" but it didn't count the rams which stuck out 2.5". I lucked out as the steel clad ceiling could bend just enough and I didn't hit on a truss.

My shop is a pole barn, steel clad inside and out, fully insulated and heated with 100amp service, that I built myself over a summer.

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.

Pics? I'm going to measure the existing concrete pad this weekend and may go larger if it makes sense.

Thanks, going to add pole barns into the mix.

Quote says 26 gauge for walls and roof sheeting.

Original idea was to use for storage but will most likely look at insulation and make a portion of it work-friend in the winter. Quote has all those things listed but I'll double check. Full Erection Drawings are listed. Also 3 sets of Engineer Stamped & Sealed Engineered Drawings

Will just hang fans for air movement. Will run gas heaters for heat.

I am going to 16" Nick. Price jumped from $27.5 to $29.9 so a no brainer. With proper NYC parking lifts, building could pay for itself in a winter or two, or just a year.

Just went to Pole Barn Quote Tool | DIY Pole Barns and priced out a 50x80 pretty well decked out with windows and such, that came to $32K.

Seems like this will be a lot of research to get the right building at the right price.

I would still call any local guys as I am pretty sure the prices will be more competitive . I am now about 95 % done with my two car detached garage that started as a pole building . Mine is 24 x 28 with 12 ' ceiling height . I then added the concrete floor and 2 x 6 studded walls . Went with CDX plywood as the exterior sheathing then vertical metal roof panels as my finished siding . Using CDX as my interior wall paneling also . R19 Kraft faced wall insulation will finish the ceiling with metal roof panels with R40 insulation . Two garage doors 10 ' tall x 9 ' wide with shaft mounted openers . I have four windows and one entry door . I have a 24K mini split I'll use for heat and AC . All in with me doing a bunch of the work I'll be at 25K and that includes a used two post lift I purchased .

Shop pic's will have to wait to tomorrow, but it's just a regular rectangle green steel clad building. Roof is galvalum.

OK, no need for a pic of a building I guess. I just want to get a get a sense of what they look like in real life vs. staged pics.
