Welcome Minnie Driver and the 7,999 other New US Citizens

When I came home today, my mother, who lives with us, had on a television show called the Talk. Five or six women sitting around a table talking about whatever they talk about.

Minnie Driver was a guest on the show today. She explained how in December she became a US citizen. She explained the thrill and excitement of being in the LA Coliseum with 8,000 other people all taking their oath of citizenship. She further spoke of the encouraging and uplifting speech given by the woman judge that administered the oath on what it meant to be an American. She closed with saying that after living in this country for twenty years she is happy to finally say she is American and no longer pays taxes without representation. She had a tea party to celebrate.

While trying to find a video from the show to post for you all to enjoy, I came across an article regarding Minnie becoming a citizen. In addition to Minnie there were people from 120 countries taking the oath with her. Sadly I couldn't find a video.

Congratulations and Welcome Minnie and the other 7,999 new US Citizens.

I think far too many American's take their citizenship for granted and don't appreciate just how lucky we are to live in this country. While it may not be perfect in every respect, it's a damn sight better than most other places.

When I lived in London, I ran into Minnie at the “American store” in St. John’s Wood. Every Sunday they had Bagels. About 100 dozen and as the American School was in SJW, they all flocked to the store on Sundays for their bagels. I literally ran into her as I rounded the corner at the end of an aisle. Noticing her basket was full of American products, I said something stupid trying to flirt a bit. This was in 2004. She actually laughed and entertained my stupidity and we talked for about 10 minutes. She was great! Really down to earth and completely at ease given her hair was pulled back and she was in sweats. I’m proud to have Minnie and the other 7,999 as New citizens. Welcome all!

A lot of people win the birth lottery and have no idea.

Very true, Peter!

Noel Gallagher regularly staggered down the SJW High Street. There is a Starbucks at the corner of SJW High Street and Circus Road. It was a few hundred feet from our town house and we used to sit outside and enjoy people watching. Paul McCartney was a breakfast regular at a restaurant a few doors down. One Sunday we were enjoying our morning coffee when my wife spied a dog she loved sitting outside that restaurant. She asked the owner what kind of dog it was, who said it was actually Paul’s dog. About that time he and Heather walked out and my wife ended up talking to them for a while (always wished my phone had a camera back then). Turns out his dog was a Wheaten Terrier. People are very interesting.
