SA Police News ~ KODA the dog.

From the SA Police FB page.

KODA the legend Damn fine result and Koda will be OK.

"Police Dog Koda is now in a stable condition after being stabbed twice this morning at Elizabeth Vale. He is pictured here recovering after surgery. Thanks everyone for your concern and best wishes.

A man has been arrested and charged with numerous offences following several incidents at Elizabeth Vale this morning where a police dog was stabbed.
From about 7.30am this morning, Elizabeth Police were searching for a man allegedly armed with a knife who had tried to steal a car at Elizabeth South. A short later the same man allegedly broke into several homes at nearby Hogarth Road Elizabeth Vale. Police patrols with assistance of a police dog patrol located the armed man and he was pursued on foot over fences and through a nearby reserve. At the intersection of John Rice Avenue and Philip Highway police dog Koda was released by his handler to stop the armed man. Koda detained the suspect, who then allegedly stabbed the dog on two occasions. The armed man was then quickly restrained and arrested by police patrols. Police dog Koda a German Shepherd, was rushed to a nearby Vet by his handler and has since undergone emergency surgery and is now in a stable condition. The 30 year-old man from no fixed place, has been charged with attempt aggravated robbery, four counts of theft, aggravated serious criminal trespass after he broke into two homes, aggravated assault police, property damage and injure animal. The arrested man has been refused police bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court tomorrow"

Good Job, Koda!!!!

I'm afraid if that happened in the USA the 'offender' would have a few hundred holes in him.

Houston recently had a different kind of police dog story unfortunately. The K9 handler arrived home left the dog in the police SUV and the dog died of heat exhaustion. How can you let that happen?

Police dog dies after Harris deputy leaves him in hot car - Houston Chronicle

Off Koda's topic , but this houston cop should be tried for animal cruelty. In L.A., if you harm a police K-9, you are tried for assault on a police officer.

UPDATE: Koda is up and about and doing well.

From the FB page: "Koda detained the suspect, who then allegedly stabbed the dog twice, one of which was in the neck with a 8cm deep wound that narrowly missed a vital artery"

Thanks for this story, Peter. Very glad to hear Koda will be OK.

I hope the perp gets 20 years for this assault.

Woof!

Great news about Koda!
Perhaps allow Koda to practice neutering.

"SA Police Dog Koda is being released from the vets this morning following treatment for stab wounds received in the line of duty on Sunday.
He’s on the path to recovery and will have some ‘down time’ with his handler over the coming days.
We will post a video and more details on Facebook later this morning. Thanks for all your support and interest. Woof!"

From the SA Police force FB page. I'm wondering what the guy was thinking.
Our Police Force have always used "Greys" that are bred locally.

"Police Horse ‘Viking’ punched in the head

Police were called to a disturbance in Register Street, Adelaide overnight.
The Mounted Operations Unit also attended where one of the Police horses ‘Viking’ was punched in the head twice by the alleged offender.
A 30-year-old man from Victoria was subsequently arrested and taken to the city watch house where he was charged with disorderly behaviour, ill treatment of animals, and two counts of assault police.

He was bailed to attend the Adelaide Magistrates Court on 5 February.

‘Viking’ was not injured in the assault and has woken this morning to a full breakfast and some extra special pampering however he is still ready to get back out there keeping SA safe.

On 25 August of this year Police dog Koda was stabbed in the line of duty and in the wake of the incident the state government announced new laws and tougher penalties for attacks on police animals.

The new laws will be introduced to parliament making it a specific offence to kill or injure a police animal.

Offenders will face jail of up to five years."

And later today

"Hi everyone, Viking the Police Horse here. My mates in the Media Section have let me log on here to give you an update on how I'm feeling. I'm much better now than I was last night, thanks to the great staff here at Mounted Operations Unit. On behalf of everyone here (the two-legged and four-legged staff members!) I'd like to say thanks for your messages of support, and I look forward to getting back out on patrol soon!

Cheers,

Viking!"

it is a dog not a cop
and was likely biting the guy at the time he stuck the dog

charge animal abuse sure assault no way
just another way the pig perverts the laws

It must have been a slow news day.

From the SA Police FB page.

Our horses made the LA Times! If you thought their heads were big before.... Page 2, with the caption 'Police officers take their horses for an early morning dip at Semaphore beach.
The heat wave that has been moving across the country is expected to give the city temperatures above 100 for five days.'

Seriously, though, I'm glad to hear both Koda and Viking are doing well.

I have to wonder - once a police dog has been stabbed or otherwise seriously injured in a struggle with some POS, how hard is it for them to get over it psychologically? I realize every dog is different, and some may just shrug it off, but I've seen dogs that have been hurt or injured by a certain activity that really don't want much to do with it anymore.

Oh, and while I agree with nota - assault charges for attacking an animal are a bit misguided - I do think that animals employed by law enforcement deserve a bit of extra consideration under the law. I just think there needs to be some differentiation between them and humans.

Thanks Jeff, I loved that movie.

Koda is back on full duty and he didn't even need any counseling.

Some sad news today...

SA Police News

Police Dog Koda, who many members of the public will remember was stabbed while on duty in 2013, has passed away.
Koda retired in 2014, taking a well-earned break as a family pet rather than a working dog.
The officer in charge of the SA Police Dog Operations Unit, Senior Sergeant Kurt Newcombe, said the community had always remained interested in Koda’s welfare following the attack, and that it was with sadness that he shared the news of his passing.
The 11-year-old German Shepherd had been ill for some time, with what was believed to be a tumour totally unrelated to the stabbing, and unfortunately took a turn for the worse last week, dying on Friday.
“PD Koda was an excellent working dog and was, sadly, a celebrity for all the wrong reasons, given the stabbing in 2013,” he said.
“During his career Koda was deployed more than 638 times and was responsible for 116 arrests and clearing 235 offences.
“Koda will be sorely missed by his handler and family.”

Sounds like he was retired shortly after that stabbing, which seems appropriate.

Way to go Koda!

Actually, I'll bet Koda put several small shallow holes in the guy. I think I'd prefer that Koda hadn't been stabbed, and if the guy had to be shot to get to that point, I'm ok with it. It could have been worse. I'm just glad that Koda is going to be ok and the guy was caught.
