Spoon class for wife

I have handled guns for most of my adult life, never had a problem and passed any firearm test first try.

My Wife has very little (if any) experience with firearms.
I have a 9mm and a shotspoon for defense/SHTF duty.
Wife has said "if we are going to have guns in the house I should know how to use them." To which I totally agree and frankly was a little pleased she feels that way.

So:
A. I take her to the range and teach her myself (I would give her basic saftey training before we left the house.)

B. Sign up for a two hour class at a local range,
https://www.laxrange.com/classes-and-events/firing-range-beginning-firearms-training/

C. So, she gets this e-vite from a lady friend:
MESSAGE FROM HOST
Friends, there were over three-hundred mass shootings in the U.S. last year. Seventy percent of them ended within five minutes. The average police response time was eleven minutes. That means our adult lives have become a lethal game of Hide-and-Seek, where the weapon wielding thug gets to say, "Ready or not here I come!"

This Urban Survival Event is an essential day of training: Four hours of intensive Combat Handgun training-with an emphasis on how to handle active shooter engagements and home invasions-followed by a hands-on Weapon Retention and Disarm Course.

Here's the Schedule: 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.: COMBAT HANDGUN COURSE. Beginners and those who haven't shot in a while will take our Combat Handgun I Course while Intermediate/Advanced Shooters will take our Combat Handgun Skillbuilder Course. All shooters will then work on vehicle ops and train in the police/military shoothouse where special emphasis will be on how to handle active shooter engagements and home invasions.

3 p.m. until 4 p.m.: WEAPON RETENTION & DISARM COURSE. You will learn how to disarm an attacker who is wielding a knife, when you are unarmed; how to disarm an attacker who is pointing a handgun, when you are unarmed; and, how to retain your weapon if you are lucky enough (or prepared enough) to have either your fighting knife or your handgun on you. Perhaps more importantly, you will get over your apprehension of carrying a weapon out of fear of having it turned on you. You will also learn how to turn your attacker's weapon on him.

Ladies, I am part of a girls gun club and I can tell you from personal experience, you will leave this training feeling empowered, not fearful. All guns will be provided for, during the event, unless you have your own.

***MEN ARE WELCOME TO JOIN THIS EVENT!***

RSVP if you’re interested, the special price of $150 for Gathering Friends is drastically reduced from the normal $250 price, yay!!!

Seems a little extreme for a begginer?

What say ye?

And yes, I want her to handle a bunch of handguns to see what fits her and she is comfortable with

I signed my wife and I up for the NRA basic hand gun course at my local gun club. She liked that I did the course with her and it was less intimidating that way. I was surprised that there were several other women in the class.

I do not, nor will I, "teach" my wife anything.

I asked a couple guys at work and one said "send her to a class, she won't listen to anything you say"

Email I just got from her "I shot a BB gun once" so we are definitely looking at a beginner class.

I didn't mean to sound pejorative, and I don't think you did as well, but there are some tasks better left to a third party.

My wife does not like guns, never has. But there did come a point, given our location and my travel schedule, that her having competence with guns was a positive.

So my son taught my wife how to shoot.

I took my wife to the range...once

After she got over her irrational fear, she turned out to be a pretty good shot. With her yoga training, she had better breath control than most.

I had her fire my Colt .22LR pistol first. As she is lining up the pistol on the target the first time, she said "I think I'm going to faint!"

After she pulled the trigger the first time, she said "That was nothing!"

And the rest of the day went pretty well. She liked the .22LR and my 9mm BHP. The 1911 and the pocket .380 were too much recoil.

Depends on your relationship.

My husband taught me to shoot. For me, it took some of the tension out of learning because I felt so comfortable. I would not have had it any other way.

If she or you is more comfortable with a class: do option B.

Option C seems extreme especially for a beginner. If she really wants to try it, I say she could give it a try but I would not go without learning to shoot first and practice.

Once she has learned, she should ask the host of option C about the women's shooting club. Belonged to one for a little while and it allowed me to practice on a regular basis. Our club met 1x a month. Sometimes we had a speaker but every meeting we spent about an hour in the range. Great way to meet new women and practice, which is what she will need.

Totally understand and agree with you.

Found a couple local ranges that offer a variety of training group & one on one.

One guy even does couples training (well, this is Los Angeles after all) that may make her more comfortable... or maybe the opposite.

She just sent me that email this morning about the 'urban survival class' which opened a dialog about guns and training which she has shown an interest in but she just got back to me via email, first with "oh my gosh!" (I don't think she had read the whole evite and didn't realize it was a tactical type class) so I sent her some links to more basic training and she got back to me with "no big rush".

Good news is I found a range 11 miles from me where I can practice

Do they have the NRA "Women on Target" where you live James? Ours here at several ranges teach everything from 22's to M1 Garand rifles including shot guns, semi auto hand guns revolvers and so on.

hello
new here, though I've been lurking a long time. decided to join when Politics and Religion was no longer open for public viewing.
Don't own a Porsche.

Wife and I have been together since 1969, in the 70's during her bicycle racing stage I quickly learned that you don't coach the person you're involved with.

She and a couple of her friends decided to get familiar with firearms and signed up with 'A Girl and A Gun'. They have factions in many states, the instructors here in SW Mich are women. My wife and her friends say they find that less intimidating.
