I'm wanting to buy this car

1963

I haven't driven it yet, so we'll see after that. In fact I don't know too much about it yet. Notice it has no side vent windows? Few other quirks too.

Yes I like the old bug. The wheels are not period correct but overall looks clean. Is the engine stock?

No I like the wheels and the engine's warmed over a bit, twin carbs too. If it was all orig I wouldn't want it, I've been there, and they are too slow.

That is not a stock engine for 1963

Several non-stock items on that car...engine, 12V electrics, front axle beam and/or spindles, wheels, window rubber, tint, front seats, inside door handles. Lots of missing trim too and it looks like the dash might've been hacked to install a modern sound system. That car has no heat for the cabin either...unless there's a gas heater in the front luggage compartment
Those one-piece side windows can be a major PITA in that they get loose in the tracks and rattle around. The doors have to be modified to install them and can't be put back to use the stock vent windows again.
The body & paint look pretty good though. If you can live with the mods, might be worth a closer look if the price is right.

Why not?

If the price is reasonable, ham sandwich.

Looks like a fun car. This car ('65) was close to my all time favorite. Not fancy, but had a 1776, new paint, interior, etc. I loved opening the sunroof and driving it to work. Got stolen. I bought one close to it afterwards, but it just wasn't the same.

I would have loved to have had that car back in the mid 1970's. I didn't have any money, though, and all the "cal look" goodies were too expensive for a boxboy at a grocery store...

I like the stance and the wheels. Can't tell if they're real EMPI or a knockoff, but the car has a nice look.

Edit, I just noticed the engine lid. I know what year it is now.

Second edit - Marv, that is a sweet ride - what color was the 65? I assume it was white and the picture yellowed a bit, but as it shows in the picture, it's a nice color, sort of a light greenish yellow! Soothing!

Marv's car looks like Yukon Yellow. Which is the same color as my '70. I'm getting it repainted in a few weeks and turning it over to my son for his daily driver. It will be a steep maintenance learning curve but we'll see how he does. It was my daily driver for 10 years.

That color on my '65 was reasonably close to the picture. I have no idea what the name of the color is/was. It might have been Yukon Yellow as Jim says. At the time I bought it for $700, put in the 1776, had the car painted, and replaced the interior & carpets along with a bunch of other things. At the time I worked for a school district. I took it to the body shop teacher and got him to match the color on the interior and repaint the exterior that color ($125 for paint & materials + $50 to the teacher). It was actually a pleasure to drive, & the 1776 seemed to have plenty of power. I'd really love to still have that car.

My favorite was still my 1958 VW bug. It was under powered and totally reliable. It was that duck egg blue color. My later bought new 1973 bug(1300 cc or 1500) had more power but did not have the character of the earlier ones. I prefer the totally stock ones but each one to their own.

Cool car. I've considered buying bugs a few times over the years, but it's just too damned hot and humid here. I don't want to buy a car that I can't comfortably drive 4-6 months of the year because I'd be sweating my nuts off while driving it.

Looks like a fun car that isn't stock. So no worries if you drive it like you stole it. Buy it and have a blast driving it.

John Walker was tempted for a time to build a mid-engine, topless Beetle. Now that would be cool.

I'd love to have another Beetle. Mine was a powder blue '69.
