Stainless bolts to mount engine to stand?

Mustang inline 6.
Ready to mount to stand but all I have are stainless bolts.
I know grade 8 is cheap insurance, but are they really necessary?

What size bolts?

Typically the tightening is what loads them the most. (not the weight of the engine)

I would likely have no issue with SS. If I did have concerns (like cheap -looking Chinese) I would torque each hard, to know they can sustain a higher load, then back them off.

I'm no fan of stainless bolts where they aren't required. They are softer than a grade 2 and they gall easily.

They are likely strong enough for what you are doing, can't say with minimal information. Bolts to an engine stand aren't usually that heavily loaded.

If they are out of alignment when you try to tighten them or you use an impact on them there is a good chance that they will gall. Use a generous amount of anti-seize.

A 3/8" Grade 2 is good for about 3000#. If the top two are in tension and I guess 6:1 for the "torque arm" of the overhung engine, those should be OK for a 1000# engine - plenty for your 6.

You can feel good about those.

The Mustang inline 6 is similar to the Datsun Z inline 6 that I had on my engine stand for an extended period with no issues. Also a Ford 300 I6 for awhile. I just used 4 standard grade 2 (silver) bolts.
