Feral dog brought us a present (may be disturbing for some)
We have a feral dog living on the property (a few months now) and her habit seems to be, stay close but vigilant and bring us gifts daily.
![]() This AM she brought us a rather disturbing gift. Does anyone have an idea what type of bird she caught? ![]() ![]()

She brought gold longs when you're a red box man?

Are you suggesting this is a neighbors capon? It seems pretty big for a chicken.
Baxter does but only after sex....he likes pizza then as well. Actually, Baxter may be why Cleo is hanging around. ![]() We're not certain about Cloe's (short for Kleptomaniac) smoking habits. No lakes to speak of (So. Cal desert) but that seems like a reasonable guess. Someone else suggested a Snowy Egret

Might be some type of kite. I would guess some kind of bird of prey.

Why do you ask?
Baxter (my dog) is wearing a collar, license and tracker but the feral dog (Cleo) is not. She seems to be an 8 or 9 month old Great Pyrenees that has been on her own for quite some time. Baxter ![]() Cleo ![]()

Fallbrook is in the desert?
It is a Seagull wing (or it is not): they get bounced here all the time by Eagles and Ospreys when fishing is poor. All depends on where they chewed it off. I mow three or four of these a year cutting grass. ![]()

My bet is on chicken too. Chances of a feral dog grabbing a wild bird is practically nil. That is definitely a domestic bird also because there is too little feather to fully fly. Compare that to the wing of a bird of prey, pigeon etc. Also, in terms of size, it could have been a rooster. Do a search for "flying chicken" to compare. I can't link any images, people are locking them down pretty good nowadays.
I would make sure he isn't getting into your neighbors chicken coop. It may be a dead dog soon otherwise. Edit: My qualifications are being a bird hunter and former SoCal resident. I have also slaughtered my share of domestic chickens that people give me once they are ready for the 6 qt coop! G |

Good look animal. She’s trying to make friends. Adopt her or contact somebody who will.

I see. In the pics it almost appears as thought there is a collar on both. A collar could offer clues as to where she came from but you knew that. Was wondering if it had been overlooked in all that fur.

Strangely enough, she won't take treats from our hands so rewarding her / training is a challenge. We tried putting a collar on her but her head is smaller than her neck. It's like putting a leash on a seal. She just slips out. The leash/collar sends her into panic mode. ![]() ![]()
