how bad do car noises bother you

just bought an 03 dodge Dakota with a V6, BTW, I will never buy another dodge. that's another story.

it has a very slight exhaust leak. I don't hear it all the time. I would have to pull the engine to fix it and risk breaking an exhaust stud, if not already broken. that may mean pulling the head.

when driving, if I turn slightly to the right I hear/feel what is probably a wheel bearing going bad. most would probably not even notice it, especially my wife.

the truck rides really nice but I think the front shocks need to be replaced. again, not very noticeable to many but I notice especially on bumps. same with the upper ball joint. they are known to go bad and I think mine is starting to go bad,

other than the exhaust stud none of this is really hard to do and would probably be fine for as long as I plan to keep the truck.
but how bad do things like this bother the rest of you or do you even notice?
when it comes to my 930 my brother says I am way to picky about how it runs. others that have driven it don't notice the things that bother me, even a Porsche mechanic friend said it was fine, actually he said it was the best driving 930 he ever drove.

"just bought an 03 dodge"

Yikes.

Interior rattles drive me nuts. My 03 Mustang has a some creaking in the rear suspension, pretty sure its bushings. A bit irritating, but nothing like the minor interior rattles in my 2011 MB. I go nuts trying to track those down. Luckily they have all be parts of the dash that can be accessed thus far.

I think it depends on how important it is and the purpose of the car.

I'd put a squeak or rattle from a part that the only problem is the squeak or rattle at a higher priority on the Jaguar than I would my other cars.

It is nice to have one quiet car for some days.

Squeaks, rattles and thumps were the reasons I went to Toyota in the 80s. They drive me nuts. Now when I hear a noise I'm fairly certain it is something I need to check on.

I have to find a better muffler for my '67 bug with a 2600cc 914 T4 engine, it has a basically straight through magnaflo and sounds like a heavily loaded transport truck. I used to love loud, but on a long trip I have to wear earplugs because of the drone, especially up a long hill.

I find I'm becoming quite sensitive to loud noise as I get older.

when I was a kid my dad would get in the trunk and my mom would drive him around lookoing for rattles. had an old 66 mustang convert.

yea dodge.
was looking for a cheap truck, not a dodge, but this one turned up from a friend. got it for 3500.
great looking truck and drives nice. 110k on it.
only planning on keeping it about 4-5yrs until the pilot is paid off.
thing is I could make money on it now.

My 99 diesel powerstroke F250 has an exhaust manifold leak that sounds like a knocking lifter, or injector. The only way to replace the gasket is a major tear down, which risks breaking other parts in the process. I can put up with it for now.

Most of my cars have quirks, i'm not OCD like some on this forum.

My first Porsche was a 1974 914 2.0 that I bought in 1974. If the roof was on, it rattled and made noise like crazy. It had no air conditioning so the window was always down in warm weather so lots of wind noise. In the winter I had the heater and the ventilation fans running. The only time that car was not noisy is when it was parked. I drove that car as my daily driver, and only car for over 20 years. My 911 is a lot quieter than the 914, but it has the fan noise and a beautiful engine noise.

My 1986 El Camino has frame-less door windows. They have lots of wind noise even when rolled up. It has over 358,000 miles on it and the dash area has lots of squeaks. I just turn the stereo up.

My wife has a 2017 Macan. That is like a bank vault quiet. It is almost eerie to ride in or drive is is so quiet. It has a great stereo system but she never turns it up above background music level.

Most of my cars have been pretty noisy

Mark, there was a guy who ran a giant flowmaster muffler under the RR fender, surprisingly quiet, considering the capabilities of the car. His dad owned the preeminent local VW speed shop. Pearl yellow, beautiful thing to look at. A turn down at the end helps more than you would think, and sound deadener on all the tin helps more than you would think. Couple yards of dynamat made a rotary swapped 510 almost tolerable to ride in.

You don’t know noise until you own an old Land Rover. I put a 6.2 and 6L80 from a 2012 Camaro in my 1988 Defender so the engine noise would drown out the rattling doors, squeaky body panels and whining gears in the transfer case. When that doesn’t work, I turn up the radio.

I have to go at this soon, the magnaflow is part of a A-1 header system for the T4 engine conversion. To do the right fender bit I'll have to use a corvette muffler (in/out same side) as the header is in the way for anything bigger.
The backseat well, etc. are done in dynamat, still too loud.

Apparently I'm the only one in my family that can hear the car noises. I will actually ask my wife and kids to find the rattle while I'm driving and they usually respond, "what rattle?".

So it bothers me just as much as the trash, food, and other assorted goodies they leave in the cars. Or the glue residue on the dash panel where my wife tried (unsuccessfully) to mount a phone holder. As if that was going to hold her gigantic tablet size phone.

My 3.2 is too loud for a long trip. The 06 Tahoe is much better but still too loud at 65-70. I'll bet adding noise abating materials would help but it is too much work to install. I've tried the noise canceling headphones (turned on and not connected to any music source) and they work pretty well. However you can get pulled over for using them - maybe I need to try the noise cancelling ear buds. So count me in as don't like noise when I drive. The noise wears you out possibly as much as the driving.
When considering new cars to buy I try and find noise level info.

Interior squeaks and rattles drive me crazy. An exhaust tick would not so much. Wheel bearings and bushings I have to look at right away.

In the Cobra I can't hear anything over the wind noise and exhaust noise.

We had a Dodge Stratus with the 2.7l V6. It developed a rod knock at 165k miles. That noise bothered me enough to trade it in quickly.

I am afraid I am OCD, its funny, I have a fire extinguisher bracket behind my head in the 930 with no extinguisher in it. it rattles like crazy. I could easily pickup the extinguisher off the floor and put it back in and quiet it down.

that's the issue with my leak. I may end up pulling a head.
I HATE noises like though. perhaps because it is not right.
with the bearing, I really enjoy a smooth car but that slight rumble thru the steering wheel may not be tolerable. eh, its not that tough to fix.
with the old tires on the 930 I had flat spotted them so much it was like driving on cobble stones. but because I new I was putting tires on I did not mind.

Sounds like you need an electric vehicle. I remember when Motion was lauding the electric cars and how when you arrived after having driven one, you were fresh and relaxed compared to an IC vehicle. I would assume that you could get some sort of Lexus, Infiniti, Mercedes, Bentley, etc... that would be pretty quiet.

Bingo! Cindy's '16 Camry is definitely constructed to be more quiet than my '09 Mustang Bullitt. No sound deadening material in the Bullitt, in order to make it "lighter"? Still a porker at 3500 pounds or so.

Anyway, the answer would be "it depends". I've become used to the normal since new sounds of the Mustang, but an unusual sound would have me paying attention.
I didn't buy it for the quiet.

And the old '77 Dodge 4X4? Rattles and Squeaks are the norm.

certainly it depends, but I am often bothered by noises in my vehicles.

By FAR the noises that bother me the most in my vehicles are the rattling of all the junk my wife lets accumulate in the door pockets. We're talking multiple pairs of sunglasses, half a dozen or so lip balm tubes, loose change, etc. One of the reasons that I like to have his and hers vehicles. At least one of them needs to be kept free of all that stuff.

Any unusual noise bothers me regardless of the vehicle or use. I need to fix it if I'm spending time in it.
