Original Bullitt interview

Interview with the owner while the car was being displayed on the National Mall. Gives insight on where the owner is coming from, car wise. Found it interesting that he said his '75 911 means more to him than his dad's Mustang...

I find it amazing that this car was owned and daily driven for so long, although he said the car was hidden since the internet was "born." When I've seen it in videos, it sounds like it's running on 7 cylinders. I can't say the current owner's dad really took much care of it. I don't think he realized the value of what he had or cared. Kind of a POS in my opinion, and the son doesn't seem much better. So nice of them to let the car go to seed and keep it to themselves.

Good stuff Paul.

Interesting point about the abuse that car took as a movie car. ...big ol camera cuts in the firewall? --yikes.

Car or old movie prop at this point?

Odd post Sounds a lot like sour grapes because his old man left him a goldmine.

It was owned by an old guy, very pre interweebs.

He had no interest in selling it, back then the values didn't really care if McQueen own it, he drove it, then the wife drove it the short distance to her job at a local high school. He didn't want to sell it back to McQueen (solairis) it was his dream car. He loved it but the clutch went, it got crap mileage, life happened, then old age happened. The son knew the history, but wasn't about to sell his dad's car, again life happen and it was sort of forgotten once more. Likely he saw what these cars were going for in the last several years and the light bulb went back on.

As far as not caring for it GOOD! It's worth more because he didn't care, didn't restore it, fix the holes the film company punched into it for camera cables and smoke machine. The car was already a POS, they creamed one side of it, the film company put 40 pounds of bondo in the passenger door. The cars finish took a total beating during the filming. All this makes it worth more.

Even when they were vetting the car the son didn't want to sell it, I hear it's going up for auction, likely because he found out it's worth between $3 to 5 million.
Not because it's POS 'stang, but because it's the unrestored original Steve McQueen Bullitt.

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.

Mark Henry nailed it. Totally different times when the owner's father bought the car. There was not much interest in what we call collector cars...historic racing was in it's infancy, and these old cars were considered just that...old cars. The current owner's dad knew the car was being looked for. But not everybody enjoys that kind of attention, so he kept it hidden.

Having kept a car over several decades I can say that indeed life happens, stages of life bring changes.

Garage
Jay Leno had the car on his Garage show a couple of weeks ago. Here is a short version of the broadcast. Worth a look on CNBC if you want to see the rest. They showed the letter McQueen sent the man asking to buy back the car.

It was also in the Haggerty mag a couple months ago, been beside my crapper, I've read the article several times.
I don't know if they got a scoop, but they also have an interesting 2nd article on how they vetted the car.

Did you ever notice during the car chase when he has to back up, the left tire smokes (from the machine?) and when he drives off, the right tire smokes. Non LSD?
