? For You Paint Experts re: painting plastic car parts

My grandsons Hyundai Genesis has these fake plastic vents on the hood. One of them looks fine, the other not so much. No idea how it got this way (that way when he bought it). I told him I would repaint it for him. The plan is to lightly wet sand with 2000 grit, clean real well, then spray with either the plastic adhering Satin Black paint from Rustoleum or the one from Krylon.
Not a very good pic as car covered in pollen... (told him he needs to keep it washed, pollen is hard on paint jobs) !!

What say ye ? Do I need to use a plastic paint primer first? or ?? or any better suggestions appreciated.

I think someone makes real replacement vents if you want to ditch the fake ones.

Scrub good and satin black krylon fusion otherwise.

2000 grit is for polishing, not prepping.

180 - 220 will be fine, use a light touch.

Spray paint for plastic will hold up as good as anything. Should do ok for 2-3 years.

That's the plan, clean good and paint. If it doesn't work out will seek replacement parts.

Trying to show him that some things with cars can be DIY. Going to have him do the work which is a new concept for him..

Get yourself a can of Bulldog Adhesion promoter. Paint will stick like glue. If you then want the paint to last as long as he will probably have the car (longer actually), use a two part epoxy paint with a preval sprayer. Home Depot sells Preval sprayers for around $6.00.

SEM Trim Black.

Matte black.

Clean, scuff and spray.

It will last years. Rustoleum won't. (I have never used the plastic spray from rustoleum - referring to their standard paint in a spray can.)

You can buy a new set of those vents on amazon for $38, so I wouldn't spend too much on wacky spray paints and chemicals.

I Am going to go ahead and have him paint them using Krylon Fusion (hopefully a teachable moment on how to rattle can stuff as he is clueless). Will most likely go ahead and replace them with new ones regardless of how they turn out.

Appreciate all the responses.
