Kauai is flooding

Hanalei is under water after 27" in 24 hours.

I know many here have special feelings about Kauai, like I do.

This is a very exceptional storm bring the highest flooding in living memory.

I got word that my family is ok, they are stranded in Haena at home for now. With mudslides and washed out highway between them and the rest of the island, but ok.

Many have had water in their homes, some houses washed away, lots of other damage.

Please send your aloha for Kauai their way.

Funny pic of a bison standing on the beach of Hanalei.

Aloha Richard

Imagine it would run off pretty quickly, which is good, unless it is washing your ass out to sea.

Hopefully will not last long.

I was able to speak with my younger son mid day, he's pretty casual about it all.

They are very used to rainy weather there. And there have been two other road closing storms this spring. But they haven't been out yet to see the results of this one, other than walking around Haena. Which he said was certainly more flooded than he has seen it before.

Alex, it can change for the better in just a couple of days, so have hope. The island has had more than its share of this stuff lately. May just be exceptionally green and beautiful by the time you get there.

Tobra is right, spectacular waterfalls and rushing rivers and streams for a couple of days and all is good again. Except for those that have sustained more damage to their homes or business places. Those will take some time to clean up and fix.

I used to love taking tours down Na Pali right after big storms to see the extra waterfalls and look for changes to the cliffs. And coast.

Thanks Bob, the house and family are well and just laying up for a bit. The pool got flooded from the pasture behind the house for the first time. The larder is kept stocked. It's a nice break to have no traffic out there and to be able to enjoy some bike riding on the empty roads. No internet now so the boys are choking on that, it will do them good to get their heads out of it for a while. Have a look around and realize what a beautiful and dynamic place they live in.

Irock, not sure what your friends will find there tomorrow, was still raining lightly today, I'd imagine they will have some stories about this vacation!

The bison wandered or swam down valley from its farm along the river. There is a small herd there on a ranch in hanalei.
Story is that it got shot, folks may be grilling bison steaks on the beach as we speak.
I'll share more details as I hear them.

Easy to be relaxed when your place is on high ground, I'm sure many aren't laughing about the situation right now. But Kauaians are resilient and will help each other thru this and will be smiling again soon.

Fingers crossed the worst is over!

Thanks for your well wishes and aloha, I' ll pass them along as best I can.

Cheers Richard

This pic of the hanalei pier area really blows my mind, so much washed away, must have lost five feet or more where the road used to be.

This is where I kept my boat in the summer, and worked charters from, and loved surfing there on the point in the winter. A home spot for me.

Cheers Richard

Amazing what water can do, especially if you have a lot go through a small space in a hurry. Hopefully nobody loses more than some stuff.

Excellent, would be interesting to compare video from before and after rough weather, and over time

Can you cook bison in the ground like pig? Probably would want a backhoe for that sort of luau.
