i should really win an OSCAR for acting..
peaceful morning..i just tossed in a half handful of raisins into my plain oatmeal.
(wait..some history. about a month ago, i took this lady over to my hipster butcher. she is the sweetest lady from the the Philippines. super smart. hard worker..she is our office admin lady. she wanted a pig face. okaaaay. there was no way i was gonna miss the facial expression of my butcher when she ordered a face. i drove her there. he was totally disappointing..no facial tic at all..maybe some excitement he gets to sell a pig face!! i wanted him to high five his wife or something..or twist his handlebar mustache while pondering a distant thought..nothing. rub his knit beanie..no..nothing. anyways. we at least got to pick the target pig head. that was cool. it was $30!! he essentially took out the skull. she went back to pick it up a few days later. i forgot all about it..) okay. so i take a bite of my oatmeal. in comes the tiny Filipino lady? she says, "hey you want to try some food?".. "Sure!" there really is no backpedaling from a "SURE!" i had even grabbed a clean fork. she plops down a tupperware container of meat. it is brick red. i knew it immediately, but i took a bite. i totally faked it!! i acted like it was delicious!! it was okay.. she said, "it is the pig face! the crunchy bits are the ear and nose!" "the rest is yours to take home.." i said, "is this chocolate meat?" "yes, but we call it ____________(something i cannot pronounce)..we add pork blood to get it that color!" i felt my cholesterol spike. my heartrate went up 10 tics to move my sludgey blood. lesson learned. never say "sure!" to a lady that had just bought a pig face. :D my wife does want to try it. i'm done. that dish would kill me. gout attack - heart attack..i think i found the limits to my food adventurism. |

My rule, never eat anything that's looking at you.

faces dont bother me one bit. i freak out when it is so blatantly unhealthy for the most part. |
Pig face is actually really good. You just have to prepare it right. Usually in a bbq manner. Without blood.

i cooked the cheeks, and they were amazing. about blood. i imagine it was a necessity back in the day. before multivitamins. :) |
I know this wasn't a "potluck", but these memes are ALWAYS rolling around in my head when eating someone else's "home" cooking.

I fully understand many other cultures like what would be "weird" food to me. I get it, I understand it. BUT, I can live without the need or desire to eat organ meat, faces or feet. I remember one of my friends in Hawaii loved chicken feet. Whatever, I will stick to hotdogs and apple pie, BBQ and most all Italian food. I do love Chinese food, Americanized Chinese food, no faces and organ meat.
I know absolutely I would be asking for seconds on pig face if I had not eaten for a couple of days. That is not likely to happen. |
I used to be a regular (at least once a week) at a sushi bar.
I am pretty adventurous (Uni, fish eggs, etc.). When you are a regular sometimes the chef will toss out something special from under the counter. I was good with that and ate almost everything he gave me. Then one day the cook comes out of the kitchen and plunks a plate with cooked tuna head down in front of me. I picked the meat off as best as could I could (it was very yummy). I could tell by their expression they were a little disappointed I didn't eat the eyeballs. then there was the place that served live uni, they would grab a uni, crack it open clean out the nasty bits and serve it up to you. The spines we still moving while you eat it... I was the big attraction at the sushi bar that night. I also like Spanish mackerel, many place fillet off the meat and serve it on the carcass with the head and tail intact (often they put a skewer through the head and tail so fish is looking up at you). That particularly freaks my wife out. :D |

Saba (nigiri) is my favorite at the sushi bar!

When it comes to food I prefer honesty.
Otherwise I may end up with a continual stream of stuff I don't like. |
My Dad says that Head Cheese was a regular when he was a kid. Some traditions need to stop. Never had it.

Which is good, as it means nearly the whole thing can get eaten. |

I have worked with a lot of Philippinos over the years. Mostly just happy to make some fish head soup in the rice cooker. Whole head, eyes and all, not for me.
