It's an east coast/west coast thing..........

Just curious about what my house might bring if it was in California? The house is a single story ranch, vinyl siding over plywood, about 3,000 sq ft on 2 wooded acres with a large inground concrete swimming pool and a separate shop with about 1,000 sq ft. Paved drive to the house and front walkway and a gravel drive back to the shop. All this in a nice rural subdivision with similar sized lots.

It depends on where in California. Northern vs Southern, on the coast or inland, desert, or ? Prices vary hugely based on location.

Yes, I understand all that, but since this is purely academic, there should be a range of prices that could be considered ball-park-ish.

Depends on where in CA you're talking about. Not all real estate here is priced like gold as many people seem to think. In the SF Bay Area and the L.A. basin, sure...but CA is a big state and there are many areas where RE prices are more in line with other developed areas in the country.

Here in the Monterey Bay area, about 70 mi south of SF, your house would probably bring around $1.2 - $1.5M. A bit more if it had an ocean view and a bit less if the property was too far out in the boonies.

It's hard to 'ball-park' it because it's very dependent on location.

Ok, now we're getting somewhere! After I see a few prices, I'll reveal what it cost me to build this place.

In the outskirts of Metro Denver I'd give it $1,299,000

In the city of LA or areas around so cal (not the desert or the Inland Valley), they almost do not exist, not two acres. They are out there in places like Bel Air, San Marino, Bradbury and such. You ready for this? Its should set you back about 3-5 mil depending on the area. An avg. house in a decent area with 1/4-1/2 acre should set you back about 1 mil.

Where I live in southeast Ventura County, you'd be looking at about $1.3MM-$1.5MM...Even more if you had some ocean view or avocados.

In the little town where I live that's situated between San Francisco and Sacramento and about 25 miles from Napa, that house and lot as described would be $2.5M easy.

Probably $250-300k give or take around here, depending on proximity to the city, upkeep, finishings, etc. One of the perks of the midwest.

Its a ridiculous question, Fred. You can't just say "California". It is wayyyyyy more complex than that.

For example, out in the desert, which is full of crackheads, that property might be worth $150K. In Laguna Beach, along the ocean, it will be $50 million minimum.

In Palo Alto this would be 10 million. That would be the high end.
In my town int he East Bay it would be a couple million
In the high desert or central valley it would be 300k. That would be the low end.

San Diego county $1.5M - $25M west of the 5 freeway. East of 5 can be as low as $300K with some pockets (Rancho Santa Fe) in the millions $.

Ok, ok, so it was a question with too many variables! I knew that from the start. But, having been to the west coast a few times, I was always amazed at the advertised property values. So, here is a bit more information about where I live in south Georgia. I am in a small county of about 50,000 people with the largest city having about 7-8,000 residents. I am within 30 minutes driving time of 3-4 relatively large cities and about 1 hour from Tallahassee, Florida. It is about 2 hours to Jacksonville, Florida and about 4 hours to Orlando if you are towing a camper. The property is in a nice subdivision in the county with 2 to 5 acre lots. When I say wooded, my two acres has about 50 large pines and oak trees! We are on a community deep well with very good to excellent water. All the houses are on septic tanks. When I bought the lot, I paid a bit over $7,000 for it! The house cost about $70K, the pool about $25K and the shop about $20K. So I have a bit over $120K in the whole thing. What brought this question up was a discussion that I was having with the Mrs. about cost of living and property values. I suggested to her that there were places (in California, for example) where she would be living in a million dollar house. While she didn't exactly believe me, she at least started looking at our home in a new light! So, yes, it was a silly question, but what you guys have said backs up my thoughts expressed to my wife earlier! Oh, and if it was on the market here, now, I think the place would go for $250K-$300K given the current improving economy.

i often joke that i would be a much better archer (bowhunter) if i had land. i would love to just walk out the back door and fire 10 arrows daily.

but that isnt the case. i would see jail time if i fired an arrow in my backyard. i am much too cute for prison.

we suffer here in CA. but it's like exercise. with the suffering comes great reward. in 15 years, i hope my house would have doubled from the big number it already is. if i stay, i stay..if i move, i'll sell it, buy the house next door to someone just like you..cash offer..plop down a yard umbrella, and say.."hey, what's up?" stick my feet into the pool and fire an arrow across the back 40.
