1964 Land Rover Series IIA 109

Holy smokes, I am very excited.

I turned 16 in 1980. Dad has always had excellent taste in vehicles and got us into 1960s Land Rovers back then. We had a '64 88, '69 88, '73 88, and the '64 109.
I worked on, all drove, all of them. Also had '51 Willys, '69 Fiat 124 coupe and a '74 tii, to name a few other articles of our affection.

I grew up in east Tennessee but the 109 came from New Jersey approx 1981-ish. We were visiting family up there and Dad spotted it. Couple visits later and we towed it to Tenn.
Dad has owned and driven the 109 ever since. All the other fascinations are long gone, but live on in my mind. ( hmm, gettin' crowded in there... )

However, when he retired and moved to BFE Kentucky, the 109 use dwindled a bit and it's been in his garage the last 9 years or so. Last week he asked if I wanted it. It's not currently driveable, been sitting too long.

So, I'm flying out on Saturday and getting a UHaul truck and trailer and towing it home to Az.

Probably will hit the road west on Thursday or so.

Excellent and congratulations! Just remember the Land Rover motto:

Land Rover, turning drivers into mechanics since 1948!

Here are some pictures of my 1976 109, 1976 101FC, and 1988 90. Love them!

Very cool...especially the tie-in with your Dad. I love it. I do have some route recommendations for you on your way to BFE.

One that got away:

With the kiddos:

The reason I sold it was because it was my DD and I was working in DC two days a week on average and the underground parking lots didn't have enough clearance.

About the third time I got drenched in my uniform headed back to my car I punched out after three years of ownership.

Dumbest move I ever saw, Mav.

I'm not a huge Land Rover fan but that is a extremely cool year... reminds my of all those African safari documentaries we saw back in the 80's

The tie-in is paramount. I'm blessed. I'll be driving from Horse Branch Kentucky to Mesa, Az with plenty of time. I'm sure I'll take my share of interstate, but please, offer some routes!

She looks great and is all stock. Any departure from factory will be easily returned if needed.
Thinking seats, maybe some lighting updates.

Nurburgring ain't got squat on this kind of white-knuckle driving!

Interstates to to Amarillo, duh.

Then go to south to Rte 60 to Clovis, Vaughn and into Socorro.

From there, take continue on Rte 60 to Show Low and into Mesa.

I love this route, driven it many times. The drive from Vaughn to I24 is so much better than the interstate. Enjoy, Dan. What a treasure!

thats funny

I thought the only way 65 was possible was just after leaving a c-130. Checked one out at Carlisle a few years ago, I got sucked in. If I came home with that I might be living in it.

It's beautiful. All my DD's are RR's, not older ones of course, but that's a beautiful truck non the same.

I really like the Series II. A few years ago I did a story on an American 757 pilot who had a Series II restored in England and then he and his wife drove it to South Africa. The best part of the story was that she was blond and they could stop traffic in places like Cairo just by having her stick her head out the window. As he said, "When you've got seven lanes converging with no traffic lights and you want to get somewhere, distracting everyone turned out to be a great strategy."

Well, that was anticlimactic.
Anything to see before Amarillo? I might take 3-4 days for the drive.

Well, I’ll add something. Your a/c consists of opening the bulkhead vents and the windows and driving at least 50 mph. So, don’t drive on roads during the heat of the day when you can’t drive 50. Oh, and stay well hydrated.

Have fun and please post lots of pictures!
