Igloo Ice Chest hinges (and i suppose the latch)

what POS!

my ice-chest rivals the best boxes in keeping thing cold. it is one of those ultra-max ones. i had it next to the best ice-chests made and it equaled every one of them. yeti, engle, grizzly, etc.

what sucks; i bet i am on my sixth set of hinges.

i noticed there are Stainless steel and some more robust plastic ones. i think the icechest is just to make money on hinges and latches.. anyone try the retrofits?

Clearly what you really need is a $500 cooler.

I replaced the hinges and latch on my 15 year old cooler (same hinges as in the link above; I went with the stainless steel latch). I probably spent $20 and may have been able to find a replacement for $35.....still ahead of the game and kept some plastic out of the landfill.

My only concern would be the screws stripping out with the stainless. I have a big white igloo too that’s great for meat I’ve made dead hunting and consider the hinges the part that breaks so a non replaceable part doesn’t...

Might also consider leather.

All those big igloos have crap hinges. So frustrating.

I have been carrying/abusing my Igloo Lunchmate every day to work for 20 years now with no problems. No hinges to speak of, but has performed flawlessly, and kept things cold in a warm environment.

My OEM hinges lasted a good five years. Got new OEM ones from my local Wally world for around $6.00. Ten minutes to replace and I was back in biness.

If you are worried about screw holes stripping out of the plastic I would suggest some epoxy on the screw threads . I would think if you are replacing the hinges and latch with decent quality stainless steel you are going to wear out the cooler before the metal hardware . So don't worry about having the ability to remove the screws in the future .
