I would choose somewhere like Spain as it is middle of the road in terms of of not being third world. It is also located north of Africa so if you wanted something wilder then it is not far to go to Africa. France might be a little too tame for you.
I have not been to Spain for 50 plus years. My mother had a vacation house there for several years and she enjoyed it. Perhaps Richard motion could fill us in on Spain and motorcycling there?:) |
I don't motocycle, but Alaska would be on top of my list. Doing that in my truck in a couple years. Asia or northern India would be my first choice through those roads high in the Himalayas like the roads around Leh. Not sure how safe it is because they are usually poorer up in those section, traveling alone and safety is always a concern. I think its much safer then Central and South America

Europe, not 3rd world but an amazing mix of cultures/scenery
Start in Southern Germany, through Austria, Slovenia, down the coast through Croatia, Bosnia, do a loop around Montenegro, then across the sea and back up through Italy Middle East, Jordan or Oman Far East Vietnam or Japan Central America/Caribbean, Costa Rica or Cuba South America, Patigonia |

Consider breakdowns and infrastructure...where are the parts and dealerships and banks?
(motion there is your next internet app) One popped tire from street debris, one broken plug wire, that's it for a while. |
Not third world (you'll make them really angry suggesting that), but Australia is a fantastic place. There is a ride called the world's longest shortcut (google that) and it's a ride through the middle of Australia from Perth on the bottom left hand side to Cairns on the top right.

I always worry about mechanical breakdowns. Definitely something to sweat when touring on a bike. |
Cliff, I think South Africa is your answer. You'll get a little of everything: beautiful landscapes, nice people, some element of danger, good paved roads, dirt roads, great food, unbelievable winelands, history, animals, great white sharks, etc.
Rent a bike in Joburg and ride it to Cape Town. The rental outfits have an affordable return service so you won't have to do the round trip. Or, vice-versa. I haven't done it, but its on my list to do soon. |
Not 3rd world but how about Portugal? I don't think there's a straight road in the whole country.
|
Contrarian that I am, I think the question I would be asking is "what country would I like to visit the most, that is also a country where it makes sense to do it on a motorcycle?"
Food enthusiast that I am, most likely the answer would be something like France. The next question will be, "why don't I do it in a car instead?", which will be much less hassle and a lot more convenient. The next thing you know, I'd be sitting in Paul Bocuse's restaurant in Lyon and the motorcycle would still be sitting back home in my garage. |
Here you go... https://offroadvietnam.com/motorbike-tours/hochiminh-trail
A guy on Adventure Rider forum did it and loved every bit of it. He did his own thing there. Nothing organised. |
Top gear had an episode done touring the length of Vietnam on scooters.
Had some good laughs in it! A good look at traveling the roads there too. https://www.google.com/search?q=topgear+in+viet+nam&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#wptab=s:H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgVuLSz9U3M DXOrUgrfMToyi3w8sc9YSmbSWtOXmM04-IKzsgvd80rySypFNLgYoOy5Lj4pJC0aTBI8XAh8Xl2MXGElOWG Zaak5gMAfYQV7mEAAAA Cheers Richsrd |

Here’s another. She has gone through some not so safe places though. But, Patagonia and Argentina looks awsome. A friend of mine did Norway and Sweden last summer. Pictures were awsome. Lots of cabins to rent along the way. He is now doing Tasmania. |
I'd recommend Rarotonga, but it only takes 45 minutes to ride around the place. However, the beaches, food, people, weather, diving, everything is excellent. A great place to sit on the beach all day then go out boozing at night.

Ethiopia. Breathtaking in every way possible. Wonderful people. I visited as a photojournalist many times in the early oughts and am, especially now, missing its warm embrace.
