Rabid coyote went after someone.

He took it out with a pocket knife! (Hope the link works - I’m on iPad)

Perhaps one of the docs here could weigh in on what rabies vaccinations entail. I've heard they are not like getting a flu shot.

Glad he made the knife kill..allowing the rabies test to be made on the coyote.

Good on Georgia for having a coyote cull program!

I found it interesting that we hear fewer coyotes now that we have move farther out into the country. We heard packs of coyotes howling every night when we lived in the ‘hood of 5 acre tracts. Now that my nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile away and there are acres of wooded land around I seldom hear them.

The critters have definitely "moved", and populations have boomed here in NC....both people and 4 legged ones . I live in the middle of what was my rural boy scout camp decades ago (now urban suburbs)....see more wildlife now here than back then....deer, coyote, etc...but the bird migratory routes have moved . Same with my now semi-rural acreage....chock full of critters not there in my youth at ALL. According to my uncle, the truly rural woods haven't changed like that...

edited: Saw a 'yote at my back fence line sometime back....the Marlin .357 has been "on call" ever since....

It wasn't just any pocket knife. It was a Benchmade pocket knife with an Axis lock.

That knife was certainly worth the premium price tag.

That is only because you now live where people shoot coyotes. Pretty much on sight; every one they see. It's called rural America. They have a real stake in how many coyotes are around.

Bingo! Like the old tale of a state hearing where a "green" type suggested Coyotes be live trapped and the males neutered. Grizzled old cattle rancher: "Lady, you don't understand the problem. The Coyotes aren't raping our calves...they're eating them."

Yep, that's what I get for being in a hurry and not paying attention.

Wow, that’s thankfully a rare occurrence but frightening as hell. Good thing he had a knife and the presence of mind plus balls to kill the damn thing.

I don’t know knives, is this a good one? I must have bought it years ago and never really used it. It’s a Gerber, lock blade. Now I’m going to pack it for my MC trip:

I like Gerber knives. Well made. I've gutted and skinned a lot of critters over the years using Gerbers. They were, of course, all already dead, having been shot first. I guess I cannot really vouch for Gerbers as a first line of defense, though.

I think of knives as sort of a “run what ya brung” kind of thing.
