Saw a Nifty BMW The Other Day

I parked my MR2 next to it thinking that whoever owned it would probably not bang my doors.
As he was removing a cancer from my nose, I asked my Dermatologist if it was his.
He said he hadn't driven it in a few months and would probably drive it until it dies. Has had it a few years.
No chance to ask further...he worked quickly.
A real looker. Talk about wood! The second one I've seen in Scottsdale.
Anyone own or drive one?

Looks like art on wheels. Any idea of a price tag?

I've seen one in person a couple of times. Pretty cool looking for sure.

Now that you mention it, the other day I saw a very late model Alpina B6 which makes it a 600hp, 4.2 sec 0-60 car with a top speed of nearly 200mph. I thought that was pretty neat too, but the I8 is much cooler.

It crossed my mind to ask but thought better of it.
I did ask if he takes it to Costco.

New $140K
2015's going for +/- $80K

I also love the look of these... but if I had 80K to spend on a car (I don't) that opens up some interesting possibilities (right now on Autotrader 2017 Cayman S @ $69K & 2002 911 turbo 4 @ $50K).

It's pretty and futuristic as hell...

But... It's also neither/nor. It's only got a 3cyl mini cooper engine (1.5L) and batteries (not many). When both are added together it's fast-ish, but not Tesla fast or even performance porsche fast. And the range is <20mi on battery only... So it's sort of a mongrel, performance wise... Very cool looking, not much of a performer either from a sporty standpoint or electrical standpoint....

If I 'm honest I'm disappointed in it from a tech and performance standpoint, but love the way it looks. Clarkson did a decent review on the last seasons of Top gear, look it up !

Yup, most of the reviews agreed that the performance and experience don't align with the supercar looks. It's like a pretty Prius.

I think its like a prototype for 30k mass market performance coupes, with a big premium for getting one a decade early

The styling looked good, but I don't think the car has been a hot seller. The 911S blows it out of the water performance-wise too.

Did you notice that the I8 gives birth to a 911?

When I worked for a large OE, we bought one for competitive intelligence and I drove it around a pretty good amount.

At the time (3 years ago) there weren't that many around, even in LA, so I would get tons of looks, people pointing, jaws dropping, etc. I was on the freeway one sunday afternoon and a guy put his entire torso out the passenger side of an Explorer and pointed with both hands at the car and then gave me 2 thumbs up. It was crazy.

The chassis is setup nicely. Ride quality and handling are both pretty good and it's quiet and controlled when you push it. Exceptionally light feeling too, the chassis has some Lotus vibes.

The interior and interface are cool. When you pop the shifter over into manual mode all the lighting changes from blue tones to red.

It has below average straight-line performance by modern sports car standards and way below average if you take the looks into account. It's a pain in the ass to get in and out of and the way the doors open + high sill, you can't really park next to another car in the lot.

Long story short, I got tired of the attention and BS comments after a few hundred miles and since it didn't offer much besides that and the looks, I went for other cars in the fleet like the Model S or Boxster.

THis is a good summation. They are cool looking but old news at this point in terms of novelty, at least around here. A good friend got one of the first ones 3 years ago, I was all over it until I learned the actual performance specs. They could have given it true super car performance, why they did not is a mystery.

They are depreciating quickly.

Not to mention that a dermatologist in Scottsdale could afford a Porsche 918, I would think.

My little sister is a derm pathologist and partner in a thriving practice, it’s a lucrative field of medicine in the right market.

They have been out for three years, has BMW improved the performance?

Saw one on the freeway in black, wow!

Eew. Thanks for nothing!

Beautiful car--cries out for power to match the looks. I'm sure an LS small block would bolt right up.

Like a sunny (scorching) AZ retirement community.
When I walked in for my appt. there were 12 in the waiting room...not one under 60 yrs. old, I'd guess.
Talk about a market, eh?
.
I hadn't paid much attention to this car...sort of a bummer about the performance.
Yes, why not put some big punch into it?
Still.........a little sex buggy.
.
I'd guess a pretty low drag coefficient.

At least it's better than Mercedes' steering wheel and gauges.... now that's scary.
