35mm slide projectors vs. LED multimedia projectors?

I know....like comparing a broom to a Dyson.

I have a fairly large collection of 35mm slides plus a vintage Kodak Carousel 760H projector with three trays. It works perfect.

I also have a device that converts any 35mm slide into a digital image (jpeg). I've been doing some of these and have shared some here (see surfing thread). Very easy.

So, now that we are in the 'modern' era, there are multi-media projectors available. I was just looking at one on Amazon and for the money seems to offer a whole lot of bells and whistles my old Kodak couldn't touch.

I'm assuming I would convert all my slides into digital files and then plug those in with a thumb drive or directly from my PC. Plus I could play any of my DVD's plus anything from my streaming source onto a large screen or wall. Think classic surf vids!!!

Here's the model I was looking at: LESHP Video Projector 1080P HD and a YT review I found below.

Thoughts?

I'd still keep my old Kodak because I like 'old school' stuff sometimes too.

Thanks!

I know you probable won't be using much but lamps last around +2000 hours... that will probably be years and years.

One question, do you have a flat screen and/or a Bluray? Most of those have a USB slot you could plug into and play your slides from there.

My only suggestion is to do a bit of reasearch on the bulb used in that or any digital projector. I had such a projector for my work, supplied by the employer, that was great but the bulb life was relatively short--I used it daily--and the replacement cost was over $300 for a bulb. Things have come along way since then, but it's something to check out, IMO, much like ink cartridges for printers.

Good point about the bulb. See below.

Yeah but what if I want to project a larger image.....like supersize a surf flick? That's where the projector will come in to play, Scott. Thanks for your reply and input!

Old projector lamps were short life, about 1-2000 hours. (I have 2 projectors, older, each was over $1000)

This projector is LED, claims to last 30,000 hours. (10 years at 8 hours a day)

I was wondering about that...thanks, dad911.

I use LED technology with my landscape lighting and as long as you get decent quality 'bulbs', they last a long long time. Light years ahead of incandescent/halogen.

Never heard of the brand.

Seems to be a white label product.

You can find stuff like this all over Alibaba.

Buy a bunch of units, slap on your own logo and BAM, you have a brand.

I know the price is attractive but do you really know what you are getting?

Why is this one

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075WT72CS?ref_=ams_ad_dp_ttl

$50.00 more than this one

https://www.amazon.com/Projector-Croyale-Projectors-Efficiency-Smartphone/dp/B071KWB4FL

The color?

And they are both the same as the one you linked.

All projectors, as well as DLP TV's, only use about a dozen different bulbs.

It's the carrier cage that's different and what you are paying for and the cage is not a wear item.

I buy my bulbs bare, no cage, $50-60 even for OEM bare bulbs.

Typically one or two screws and you swap the new bulb into your existing cage.

When a bulb blows in your home do you replace the entire fixture or just the bulb?

Same concept.

Any low price model that will work great? By the way, this projector looks like my favorite keychain flashlights. Although, keychain lights size is small.

Not really answering your question but some related info. I made a home theater about 7 - 10 years ago. I put in a Panasonic projector and have had a wonderful experience. My projector was about 2000 back then. I managed to break it trying to clean it last year and bought a used projector of the same model as it was really a great product.

Mrs LWJ and I watched a movie last night and it is still wonderful. It gets used probably 2 times a week or more.

The only thing that impacts a projector is ambient light. We have eliminated this and have a high quality experience.

Good luck. A fun project.

Hello
New member here, been a lurking reader for a long time.
Worked in the Film/Video dept of a liberal arts college for 30 plus years.
We had projectors where the lamps ranged from $150 t0 $5000.
I would remind our students that only in film do you capture a moment in time that can be viewed without any other device, all of the new mediums need to reconstruct your image. I love my Kodak projector and collection of Kodachrome slides.

Have a great weekend

Thanks for the input, Scott! Doesn't surprise me a bit about the labeling given the electronics industry is notorious for doing stuff like this.

That said, the unit you posted above in black is $50 less than the one in my post, and looks to be identical, so looks like that's the one I will be getting.

Good morning Rich......

Thanks for your post and comments!

I agree, which is why I'm keeping my slides and Kodak projector. I was looking at some last night and just the way the carousel rotates and sound of the slides going in and out really adds to the whole experience.

The analogy I would use is using a turntable and LPs' vs. digital MP3 player. Completely different listening experience.

Old school...and proud of it...

Thanks, LW.....I'm looking forward to it as well. I just added a canopy to my back patio and am thinking if I could set that up it would be perfect.

Thorens TD 160 Super with an SME tone arm and Shure V15 type V, there's more magic in that chunk of diamond dragging itself across a piece of vinyl 'floor tile' than any combination of zeros and one's.
I shot 54 rolls of Kodachrome when my wife and I quit our jobs and rode bicycles from Chicago to California in the 70's. Have 5 carousels full and love checking them out now and then.

This was my concern, mostly because getting replacement bulbs might be problematic... however at $200 the projector is pretty much disposable so I wouldn't worry about it too much. When it burns out just toss it out and get a new one.

They are looking at moving our parking lot farther away from the building so I was looking at those electric two wheel folding scooters. All made in China and when you ask about replacement parts such as tires or batteries hey respond in broken English "just send product to us and we fix" but there is no address listed you may run into the same thing trying to get replacement lamps.

We have also done the new bulb install into the old cage thing here at work but the bulbs are getting harder to find... and the new high end projectors have 'smart' lamps... and the new wave is laser projectors so in a few years lamps will be a thing of the past... well, except for these inexpensive home units.
