Can you avoid the two streets completely? My tennant with the "nipper" is also a pretty intimidating LEO. Part of me wants to say that old dude needs a friendly "talking to" by the popo, but escalation is the last thing you want. The goal here is to NEVER have your dog interact with a stranger (dawg or human), while you keep her for her "golden years" imo. This is a tough one Steve....I can understand your wife's "mental anguish" now...

Just don't do anything rash imo...mebbe the guy was under the influence and already having a bad day...I dunno.

I feel so bad for you guys...best of luck!

If somebody pulled up next to me in a vehicle and told me that they were going to shoot me if I set foot on within their view, one of two things will happen. I would immediately push back against the guy's threat if I thought he was just being an *******, or I'd call the cops if I had any thoughts that he might be deranged enough to actually do it. There's no way I would let it go unchallenged. You need to deal with this guy, one way or the other. He doesn't rule the world. You can apologize for what happened but that does not condone his subsequent behavior. It sounds like he needs a little ass kicking but the smarter approach might be to let the cops deal with him.

^^^ Yeah me too.....but we're "alpha males" as is Steve. If it were just one of us...easy peasy to handle a confrontation like that....and my dog would be the least of that old dude's concerns if he pulled that crap on me or my wife.

Methinks the real issue here is Steve's missus.
...thus no escalation imo.

Man....what a tough one....

If you watch Judge Judy you will see that she has no sympathy for dogs that bite or the owners that are supposed to control them.

From what I remember if a dog takes a run at you she says you have the right to defend yourself. I have mentioned before that if a dog takes a run at me I run towards it and usually they back off. So if the dog runs at me and does not back off I could in theory kick it and break its jaw. Owner would be p-ssed but Judge Judy would I think be on the side of the person being attacked.

Control your dog or get rid of it. It will happen again if you don't do something Steve.

I think this is the bigger story here. I pretty much agree with javadog, but the guy is not dealing with a full deck at least while drunk, so I wouldn't aggravate him directly. Let the police know what's going on. Threats like that can't be left unanswered.

Are you packing? Also, definitely contact the police. They need to see if this guy has a gun. Those are threats and needs to be addressed.

EDIT 2 - Those are death threats. **** this guy.

EDIT 3 - His streets? Who the f made him sheriff? FOH.

I gonna go against the flow here....defuse and de-escalate. Though not to be taken lightly imo....

Remember the goal....keep the dog, and keep the missus happy

I'd go have a polite face-to-face (if possible) with the old guy and "read him" though....then go from there.

JR is right.

The old man has the upper hand and that's the way he wants it. A fresh apology is a waste of time and will give him more hand. He's going to try to dominate you as long as he thinks it will work.

The old man does need a wake up call but you have to decide if you want to be involved in it or just put him in your rearview. Threatening to kill people is sort of a no-no.

If you think he's actually crazy and going to shoot something then it's time for the cops. And add lots and lots of time and lots and lots of money.

Respectfully disagree....I'd talk to the guy, but there would be NO doubt in his mind (if he's unapproachable) that I meant business. And I'd be absolutely ready to go down either path he chooses to take...his call.

This is Texas, and the way he reacted, there was no telling if he'd had a gun sitting on the seat next to him. I wasn't going to escalate when he was still in an agitated state

Not really feasible.

Yeah, I wouldn't be that worried about it if it was just me...

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. We've got a LEO in the building that I'm friendly with. I'm going to try to run into him to give him the low down and see what he thinks as well.

I'm sure it's not cool, but it's probably also not illegal. And unless necessary and/or I've actually seen a gun, I'm not wanting to escalate.

I'm hoping to talk to our local LEO in the next day or two and see if he has any thoughts or recommendations.

I'm hoping things turn out well...for both you and the dog.
