It's the US-turn for 2007.
Drago: You don't have much to do, can you plan it? Mt. Hood area? Bryce Canyon?

Gunter,
I'm currently working more hours than I care to mention. I've got no time to plan the Round-Up this year. Someone else will have to step up if it is to happen this year.

Gunter, you must be getting restless, out there in the Kootenays!
The only rule this year, is that no one goes until I find a new ride!

![]() Very interested in the final set-up of Millie and Smurf re: Engine, suspension, brakes, etc. I agree that the early 70's models have an attraction; I would go for a '73 RS replica. Looking forward to the Round-up. When and where?

I know the feeling and debated what to do for a couple years. The 964 in Arizona was fun to drive but it didn't have the raw feeling you get with 911's prior to '89. Didn't want to pay the huge tax/duty to bring it into Canada, 20% up the cats ass, yakh! Sure, it had 11.3:1 CR, 250 HP stock, coil-overs, nice brakes but, the 964 is 400 lbs heavier than the SC!!!And power-steering. So, comparing HP vs. weight, it made more sense to increase the HP in my SC/Carrera by building a SS 3.2 with about 230 HP at the crank. And no power steering. Last year I decided to buy a running 3.0 from an '82 and build a SS 3.2. Great experience and fun. Cost: Altogether about $10K to build but, after it is swapped out, I can sell the 3.0 (Rebuild 2 years ago, has Mahle P/C's) for $6K. JW just rebuild my 915 which has LSD. With the refreshed 915, and a SS 3.2, it should be a lot of fun to drive. The 964 and 993 are newer, have the desirable 3.6 and I don't rule out getting one in the future. Last year Weissach had a realy sweet 993 in sea-foam green, very nice, with Tiptronic. I would have bought it but I don't like Tiptronic. Hope you find your dream car.

Gunter, I know what you mean about the superior tactile nature of the older cars....just one of my dilemas. Your engine project sounds like fun, and will definately renew the relationship with the 'ol SC. If I come across a hot-rodded SC or Carrera for sale, I would have a serious look at it.
I'm currently of the mindset to "buy the newest you can afford". It seems that every generation of 911 gets faster, and more sophisticated, but less DIY friendly (major importance to me), more expensive to maintain (but hopefully less to fix since newer), and perhaps not quite as "exciting" to drive at full tilt. I love the body style of the 993, but I won't have any $ left to "personalize", and guilt will likely set in for having such an expensive toy in the garage. The ageing electronics also kinda freak me out.. At the moment, the 964 seems like the best mix of old and new. Torquey 3.6 engine, coil overs, great brakes, A/C, and with the right suspension mods, and some weight loss, it should be a fun cross-country machine. Stylistically, the front bumper looks great, but the rear bumper looks like a lumpy stuffed sausage (fixable I suppose). Gunter, I'd love to get more of your feedback on driving the 964. I only tested a couple, and they both felt kinda "soft", great engine and trans though! Then there's always the SC or Carrera, but as I alluded to earlier, I wouldn't be satisfied with a bone stock one, since I "been there, done that". I even entertained the idea of a 930, but I feel too old for that boy racer image. The extreme fender flares and tail are starting to look dated, and are bit over the top in my opinion. The engines seem to burn out a lot quicker, maybe they just run hotter or get driven a lot harder. I could go on, but you probably get the jist. So who knows what comes up, spring is just around the corner! ....maybe an RS clone......

Good stuff, Al.
964 sounds good with certain mods. Can't get SSI's for it, some people use 993 exhaust set-up. '93 RS is very nice but not worth the extra premium IMHO. Besides, I don't really like the rear tray-spoilers but do like the stock grill-spoiler that pops up at certain speeds. Yes, a clean 964 with LSD, sunroof, silver on black leather, would be very tempting for me, about $20-25000.- for a clean one. The one in AZ was stock '92, no LSD, was o.k. but didn't feel raw or really tight. I don't know if the power steering can be disconnected without problems. I think Porsche intended to mix the sporty feeling with more comfort/luxury. Of course, with certain mods re: suspension and reducing weight, the 964 can be exiting. But modifying the HE/muffler is not cheap. Like any car you buy, it requires starting over to set it up. When I went to JW in Seattle for my 915, we talked about Porsches. I asked him what he would buy if he was in the market. He would go for a '87-'89 Carrera, do some mods to it and have fun. He has a point there, especially if you find a Euro-Carrera. One thing is for certain: A 911 is no fun unless it is set up right and feels tight. I think if you watch the weight vs. HP-issue, 230-40 crank-HP in a basic 911 is exiting. 280 HP in a 964 is nice but you have to consider the extra 400 lbs that take away from the performance.

Good luck to Al and his quest.
Back on topic....... Anything on possible location and month this event is going to be?? I am planning road tours for the Canada West folks and would like to fit this one in as an exciting extra. Cheers.

Charlie,
I'm not sure if anyone has volunteered to plan and host this years Round-Up. Typically someone would be picked by last years host at their event. I didn't attend last year so maybe some of you that did could chime in and let us all know if someone is working on this. If all else fails I hereby nominate Scooter and his lovely wife Lori to host this year...'bout time he stepped up. ![]() Maybe Mille will be done in time...usually the Round-Up is in late July, early August.

Drago-Man:
Judging by your numerous replies on this board, you seem to have a lot of time on your hands, so, step up and do it. Dust off the pages from the run near Mt. Hood that was organized by Island911? couple years ago. Great run, great roads, love that area and have been back there about 6 times. Lots of Motels in The Dalles. (Or Hood River) Pizza and beer at Spooky's. Breakfast at Cousin's 6:00 AM. Run starts at 7:30 AM See how easy it is? Plus, all the prestige attached to being the MC.

Island and I worked on the last US Can-Am run to eastern Washington two years ago. Rescueing it after it had been cancelled. I am interested in organizing a run, but not ready to commit right at this moment. Warning: If I organize the run it will be an overnight - two day drive with a mix of nice roads and socializing. Possibly three days, which may inlcude a Friday night hotel stay and socializing. It would be nice to have everyone in one location, so we can get an early start Saturday morning.

Island was the MAP Guy. Good luck getting him to do that again. ![]() Yes, I know Scooter and Glenn saved the Round-Up from the ashes. Therefore I hereby nominate RSlater (aka: The Captain) and his sidekick Wheels(aka: Ms. Greenjeans). ![]() Or perhaps there's a retired fellow with all sorts of big ideas that could step up. Nobody said a Canadian couldn't plan the Am side of the Can-Am event. Besides, you seem to have it all worked out already!

To give credit where credit is due, I have to say that Island did the lion's share of the work on the last US Can-Am run.
