Smugglers box firewall hole question
Long time lurker, first time poster. I recently acquired a 1974 911S project from this forum’s classified section. It’s the first 911 that I’ve owned, and even as a project I’m excited to finally have a car that I’ve wanted to own for years. I’ve done restoration work on other cars and projects, just finding my way into the intricacies of this one.
I’m looking for some insight on the condition of the smugglers box compartment and firewall on the passenger side of the car. The previous owner advised me that the car had a dealer installed air conditioning system with some non-factory holes to make it fit. I’m wanting to eventually install electric air conditioning in the car. This won’t be a flip, or a high value car, but I’d rather not half fast the job. I plan to keep it and enjoy it, but taking shortcuts isn’t my thing. In my compartment it looks as though the firewall hole was widened in comparison to what I’ve seen in other pictures on the internet. I know I have some pinhole rust near the bottom corner as well. Before going into major surgery to replace the firewall I wanted to gather more opinions on this. If this cutout is more normal than I’m aware of I’ll make repairs and move on. If it’s mangled I’ll swap it all out. Pictures should be attached. Thanks for your time. ![]() ![]() |

Perhaps slightly larger than others I have seen.. but not by much. In the 70s the guys installing AC were paid on production.
Restoration Design has the correct replacement panel for you. Good luck with your project |
