The car is originally India Red. The color you see is Restoration Shop Acrylic Enamel "Swift Red". It was the closest color I could eye up to the previous owners MAACO paint job. It actually has a much more orange tint to it when it's glossy.
Regarding the body work...what you can't see very well is the rear "bumper valence". It was also crushed nearly flat when we bought it. I used a 2" hole saw to cut an opening into the underside of the valence so I could insert a 6" x 1/4" diameter rod into the cavity and then drilled several holes into the upper edge of the "valence" to push a chain through and thread the rod through the chain. I then used a come-a-long to pull the chain and pull out the crushed valence and form the correct edge.. I did this at 3 or four points along about 30" of valence from the driver's side corner and then welded up the chain access holes. It's not absolutely perfect but you'd have to be looking for flaws to tell. jmd_forest

India red and gaurds red is the same, at least on 911's. Are you going to attempt to use the second gallon you ordered?

I'm going to sand out the sunroof (again) and maybe the hood (again) and reshoot using the Swift Red AE thinned 3:1. If it doesn't put a perfectly flat coat on I'm gonna do something else, as of yet unknown

So...I talked to a local painter and showed him the 944 sunroof. He suggested switching to slow reducer and overthinning the paint. Also did some web research on painting acrylic enamel and found more suggestions regarding overthinning. Today was about 82 degrees in South Jersey and with the halogen lights in the garage it must have been at least 87-90 degrees in there. Used the slow reducer and thinned it an extra 20%. Put on 2 beautiful wet coats that came out very nicely, used a touch up gun for the door frames and the pressure gun for the body. Put on a third and final coat reduced 2:1. Came out 95% like glass with the tiniest bit of OP in a few very limited spots. Got 2 very shallow runs and the normal dust you'll get in a garage job that I should have no trouble color sanding out but the car basically looks great.

So here's the finished project. $500 project car + $1200 parts + 500 hours of labor. The paint can out pretty good. I'm going to wait a couple of weeks for the paint to completely harden up and then color sand and buff out the finish. As it stands, there a little bit of OP in a few spots and 2 very shallow runs.

Just had the same damned issue tonight. Good paint, too PPG: Delstar, mixed per spec sheet at 8:3:1. Dry spray at most settings, ended up running and sagging at anything that didn't go on like sandpaper. The prep was PERFECT. Car was painstakingly sanded to 400, guide coated, the works. Shot the bumper outside in 50 degree weather and actually gave better results than shooting the rear quarter of the car in the booth at 65 degrees. This was a great way to f--k up a lot of hard prep work.
![]() I have shot 3 part from old school guns and laquer from HVLP, but this was the first time using 3 part in an HVLP (Lowes Kobalt gravity feed HVLP). Are these things just terribly hard to shoot or is my gun not working right? (yeah, right, blame the gun... ![]()

FYI - As I understand paintgunb setup, you pull the trigger and adjust to pressure specs at the regulator on the gun.

what is wrong is that with HVLP . you need to make the hole systom HVLP . what you need to do is start at the air compressor and change out the fitting there and then the air lines and all fittings with cuplers . HVLP works with more air flow not pressure ! do you know what HVLP stands for ????? high volume low pressure . you need more air . never change the mixing ratios of your product that your spraying . it will lead to other headaches down the road .
