installing roof lining
I sort of know what I need to do, and can probably bumble my way thru it.
But there has to be a smart way to do a decent job on installing a new interior roof lining (no sun roof) - start at front centre, do this, and that etc. Any tips? Thanks Alan |

Do a search on "headliner install". there are several good threads. Also, DTW is doint one right now -- you may be able to collaborate. Joe

Alan -- This is a good thread on the topic.
Good luck -- take your time and you'll find it's easier than it looks. I found the toughest part to be fitting around the A-pillars and windshield corners. Joe

Mine is an SC (well 930 to be exact). My old lining has none of the rods that this thread talks about. Do I not need any?

I thought all of the air cooled cars used this type of headliner, but I could be wrong. We need to get some broader input from the board, but it doesn't look like the Paint and Bodywork forum gets a lot of traffic. You might want to ask a moderator to move this thread to the main 911 Technical Forum, or as an alternative, you could look up DTW's thread in the main forum and post the question there. I'll see what other research I can do on headliners by year. Joe

Joe,
The issue may be that I am putting a non sunroof lining in a sunroof car. I have removed the sun roof and replaced with a lightweight panel for track. But the lining I took out definitely had no rods. May post it on main board as you suggest. Regards Alan |

you need the rods/bows to support the headliner, it will just drape down if you don't have them. when i installed mine i used plyobond glue - you can get it at any hw store. it is just right stickyness and you can peel it off to re-pull sections to get wrinkles out. i also used binder clips and clothes pins to clamp the edged while the glue set. also, make sure you have the little metal clips at the windsheild and rear window. i would work from the center of the windsheild and rear window out to the sides.
hope this helps! -matt

Hmm, the rods/bows must be unique to the non sun roof versions?
Have any of you guys installed onw into a sun roof car with rods? I presume you are all doing non-sun roof cars? Alan |

Correct,
Only the non-sunroof cars have the bows for tension. I'm getting ready to do mine (with sunroof) after I get it back from paint Rich

Anyone got a pic of what these bows look like - may have to make some.

Pic below shows mine after removing the old headliner and painting the bows. THe small black tubes in the upper left are rubber ends for the rods. The rods need to be the correct length for their positions to achieve the correct fit and tension. These are apparently still available, and not very expensive. From Pelican: 901-555-511-20 -- front 2 bows $6.00 each. 901-555-512-20 -- bow #3 $6.00 901-555-513-20 -- bow #4 $6.00 644-555-515-00 -- rubber ends $125 each. PEL-911-HL-04 -- Tension clips (set f&R) -- $5.05 ![]()

Eee Gads! I hope you meant $1.25 each for the rubber ends and not $125!
"644-555-515-00 -- rubber ends $125 each." cheers, Michael
