Clear Coat or not?

I have a 1988 911 in Grand Prix White. Was this color and model year clear coated by the factory or not? Have seen conflicting answers - when did Porsche start to use clear coat on their cars?
Thanks, tk

One way to check is use a little high quality rubbing compound and look at the rag. If it's white, no clear coat.
