Smaller wire might help. What size are you using now?

i burn through after about 1/4 inch.
could i be moving too slow?
if i pause and restart, no problem, but it doesn't look too clean

How much of the wire is sticking out when you start. If it is too short it may cause burn through.

usually start with 3/8" exposed and work about 1/4" from the surface.
i usually push the puddle.

Are you welding sheet metal? Have you seen the video on this page?

great link, what a coincidence, that's what i'm already doing with my "pause and restart" technique.
i just didn't know it was kosher. its true the welds are a little over-penetrated. thanks to all for their input.

Faster wire feed=more current=more penetration=more burn through

Less wire stick-out=more penetration=more burn through

Slower travel=more penetration=more burn through

Hotter gas (CO2)=more penetration=more burn through

So use M5 gas, longer stick out, lower current and higher travel speed.

You should also stitch weld, maybe 1/2-3/4" at a time to avoid burn through.
