1980 911 SC paint help

Hi Guys

seems that the color of my 1980 911 SC is totally fading away, plus i have some rust spots around the windshield and on the doors (plus chips and dents on the front).

I've sanded a lil bit the rust, and applied the rust compound to make it inactive and let me paint on it (should i believe this or should i sand to bare metal?); now i have a problem: the touch up paint that i have is called T30 hellblau (metallic blue), but i can't find it anywhere!

I have the remnant of a touch up can (2 coat pencil), but even using it the color is too bright compared to the areas where i applied it....

Is the right moment to paint the car from scratch? I would love to do a good job but the prices here (south bay, CA) simply make me wonder how much money these people make in a year lol.

Someone suggested me Maaco, for a dirty job that would make the car at least all the same color, but i am scared to bring my car there after hearing all these issues with bad jobs (you get what you pay for...), so i do not really know what to do

Any suggestions? even using wax the result is the same; and right now i can't find the paint, i can't afford a total paint job in a good body shop, and i am scared to go to maaco >_<

I just meant to go with all black primer for now and no color. It is a look not all would be OK with, but some of us kind of dig it. There are a few threads that have some pics. Do a search. There was one recently. Search for "satin black" in 911 threads. I would dig it up but need to take off. I think it can be a cool look.

Admittedly though, it would only save you time (labor $'s of spraying color coats and clear if needed, plus final sanding and buffing if you are paying the shop to do) and materials of the color paint, which my understanding is that the black is significantly lower in cost. But don't quote me.

be careful using a primer, primers are usually very porous. Which will let moisture in, again. If you chose that route go with a satin black topcoat.

Just curious what you ended up doing? I'm in a similar situation. My front half of the car is faded and can use some touch up body work.

I was planning on getting it resprayed and fix a few areas hopefully in the not to distant future. But I'm not spending $ 10,000 to do it. Like you, I'm not very trusting of Maaco. I do have a body shop guy that I trust, I haven't talked to him about it yet.

Maaco is fine if you do ALL the prep. Insist on it being the 4th car of the day for the same painter and supply the paint. If you do the prep they will do a good job.. if not.. well.. forget it.

Basically youd have to either remove all the body gaskets or rope them.. tape everything up and roll it in.. (also rough up the finish)..

This is my opinion and could easily be wrong but I have a maaco car and its great except for the prep.. they will guarantee no runs.. if they run they will sand it out and reshoot the base coat.. if its in the clear I would wet sand it out myself. they key is to have them touch your car as little as possible. Just go look at cars as they roll out.

Painting is all prep and then technique on spraying... if you can lay down a nice wet coat with no runs you are officially a painter.

My opinion.

Did you have them do the Signature Series job? What did it run if you don't mind me asking?

I didnt have it done.. PO.. but I did call them and talked to them about doing it. Basically they will use their best grade paint and do it for about $1000. But I would NEVER use their paint.. not sure they would go for using PPG though.. i bet they would.. they wont even tell me what paint they use... freakin scary as hell.

This was for a car with all windows out, all deco off or taped.. etc.. fenders off...

Basically if you are willing to do the hard work... lol..

you'd want to fill all your paint chips also.. then sand.. oh the joy.. this is why it costs $8k to do it right.
